Dorothy gave the maids and stylists a cool glance, and they hurried to gather their things together and get out of the door, leaving the Lady Catalonia alone with the as yet uncrowned Queen of the World.
“You look fantastic, Miss Relena,” Dorothy said, gushing approval in her voice. “Now if you would just smile a little...”
Relena turned to gaze at her with serious eyes. “Why should I smile?”
“Come now, Miss Relena. It’s not every girl who can say that they became Queen of the World before they turn sixteen.”
Relena laughed. The sound was too sweet to be bitter, but there was no happiness in it either. If anything, her laugh was sad and resigned. “Of all the things I wanted before I turned sixteen, this was not it.”
Dorothy tilted her head. “What did you want, then?”
Relena looked down, a picture of resignation. “Just stupid things. I wanted to go on a safari. I wanted to take a first-aid course. I wanted my first proper kiss.”
“You’ve never had a proper kiss?” Dorothy asked, startled.
“No. One of the boys in my class kissed me once, but that was just his lips against mine for maybe two seconds, and it was a dare.” She sighed. “Oh, well. I’ve still got half a year, anyway. Maybe I can order someone to kiss me.” This time, not even her normally sweet voice could hide the bitterness.
“You mean your Gundam pilot hasn’t even...?”
“My what?”
Dorothy snorted impatiently. “We’re not still playing that game, are we? Your mop-headed boy with the remarkable eyes.”
Relena sighed. “Heero’s only touched me twice, and one of those times was when I asked him to dance. I don’t think he’s ever even thought of kissing me.”
Dorothy gave her a long look. That tone of resignation in Relena’s voice was getting annoying. This was not her idol, who denounced her brother to protect her country, and who surrendered in such a spectacular fashion that the world still looked to her for guidance.
Very well, then.
Relena gave the taller girl a startled glance as she grabbed her face gently but firmly, tilted it up and pressed their mouths together. Relena’s eyes grew large and her mouth opened reflexively. Dorothy pressed forward, pushing her tongue into Relena’s mouth.
Just as Relena started to think that maybe it would be polite to kiss back, except was that what she really wanted, she wasn’t sure honestly, Dorothy pulled away. She gave Relena a considering look, then nodded in satisfaction.
“There. Now you have been kissed.”
Relena blinked dazedly at her.
Dorothy smiled that peculiar little smile. “Let me just reapply your lipgloss, and then you’re ready to address the world.”
