In the Beginning...

Man, I am horrible about updating this.

Recent events have been life-changing. On Jun 30th, 2006 (a week from last Friday) I asked Jill to marry me.

We had been planning a trip to Cape Cod for about two months and unbeknownst to her, this was the place I decided would be the perfect place to ask. I was not sure exactly when or where I was going to pop the question, but I at least narrowed it down to that Friday. We arrived at the Midway Motel in North Eastham around 10:30 on Thursday night. The rain had held off until after we went to bed and we woke up to some soggy, dreary looking weather. We got up and went to breakfast, and by the time we left the Fairview Restaurant, the sun had come out and the temperature started to rise. We took a drive to the bike shop to pick up some chain oil (lubing the chain of my bike is some thing I had neglected to do for several years now), and then headed north to explore the eateries that Truro and P-town had to offer. After a few hours of finding nothing but seaside cottages and a downtown area lavishly decorated with American flags and rainbow banners, We decided that perhaps the Beachcomber in Wellfleet was the place to go since they were beachside, served seafood, and despite being more of a bar and nightclub than an establishment of fine dining, it offered the opportunity to walk on Cahoon Hollow beach after dinner (something that we discovered last year and enjoyed it very much). So, we headed back to the hotel and took a nap. Around 1:30, we packed up the bikes and headed to Nausset Light Beach. The weather was fantastic! It wasn't too hot, but warm enough to be comfortable in beach wear and there was a nice ocean breeze. Excellent biking weather and even better beach weather. We laid there till around 4:00 and then biked back to the hotel to shower and get ready for dinner. I was a little worried that Jill may be getting suspicious since I put on a polo to go the Beachcomber, but I was relived when she put on a cute little blouse. A little dressy, but not too much.

Dinner was great (except for the sand fleas that seem to love the outdoor deck). I dismembered a lobster while Jill has a Cesar salad. After a few drinks and a very filling dinner, we went for our "traditional" walk on the beach. Even though Cahoon Hollow is on the eastern shore of the lower cape, it is still very beautiful in the evening. We walked down a few hundred yards from the parking lot and sat down in the sand to enjoy the environment. In true Jill fashion, she started drawing pictures in the sand. It became a little bit of a game where she would draw something and I would guess what it was. After a few elephants and seashells (one of which I thought was a person's lower intestine), she drew a stick figure girl and boy holding hands and surrounded by a heart. We kissed at that I got to talking a little bit about our vacations to the Cape and how we should make it a yearly vacation. "I got one" I said to her pointing the flat sand canvas we had been using, and drew up a simple diamond ring in the sand "A Ring!" she said, apparently still clueless as to what I was about to do. She started tearing up when I turned to face her on my knees and took her hand. "You're gonna make me cry aren't you?" to which I replied "yes". Then I asked it "Will you marry me?" and her answer was "Of Course!" as she threw her arms around me without even looking in the small black box I had pulled from my pocket.

We stayed there for another half hour or so until the sun went down, taking pictures and trying to soak up the moment. We left to celebrate with some ice cream at Frank's Sub & Cone and then went back to the hotel.

The next day, neither of us could sleep so we went to breakfast at 7:30. Afterwards, we went back to the hotel and took a ride on the rail trail up to Wellfleet and back. Then we packed up the car, took a drive to Truro Vineyards to pick up some wine, and then headed off to Mom and Dad's recently completed vacation house up in Maine for the rest of the weekend. We stayed there from Saturday night through Tuesday evening, spending time with family (Mom, Dad, Rob, Michelle, Angelique, Dan, Audrey, Mike and Evelyn, Pepe - Michelle's grandfather, and Grandma Tremblay), sailing, laying on the rocks at Perkin's cove, and just relaxing with my new fiancé. :D
