[ He halts, about to turn it off and paused at the unexpected response. ]

There has to be a way out.

A fine answer. Effective, to negate a potential struggle.

[ He's not taking it at face value, here. He doesn't know you. ]

[ Sousuke's voice is as bland as the expression on his face, though there's the faintest undercurrent of understanding in his mild tone. ]

No chain is indestructible, however impossible to break it may seem.

True enough. Though simple determination would not be enough.

Not usually, no. I've found it also helps to be possessed of a bit of cleverness, too.

Unfortunate that I'm in no mood to sit and be clever, for the time being.

[a chuckle] It's quite an unfortunate thing, isn't it? Though, for two other "chained" individuals to show up in the same period? I must admit I'm quite surprised.

Well, of course. But one grows used to them. Though I find it distasteful to say chains. I've always been more fond of the metaphor of being the goldfish that can't exist outside of its bowl. It's a bit more accurate.

[She takes a drag from her pipe, blowing the smoke into the air] Ah, but you'll find there's no use to trying to break free of them. Even if you leave the district, apparently there's nothing beyond the walls. It's a fake freedom.

[ She's pretty familiar with what he's feeling, honestly; while working to get her wish granted was preferable to a choice between being a Cie'th and destroying a world... Neither are quite exactly 'freedom.' ]

But... It's not so bad, huh? Because at least here, you're going to end up getting your wish granted... Right?

Do you really believe that?

[ Sounds pretty skeptical, himself ]

Yeah. I do. [ She nods. ]

Don't you?
