Film Review: Serenity
I will begin with a caveat. My opinions on this film will be incredibly biased, due to the fact that I loved the series 'Firefly'. The interplay between the characters is excellent. It must be difficult to juggle nine main characters, but yet it works brilliantly. Each one of them feels integral to the storyline and the running of the ship.
This brings us to the film. While the original series was very Westen themed, this is not really carried through to the film. I think this is in part due to the fact that it doesn't take place on the outer planets, for the most part. I do hope, however, that if they make another series or film, that we do get to see the Western influence again.
The action sequences are excellent, and well filmed. It wasn't on a huge budget, but you wouldn't know it. The film jumps straight into the story, assuming that most of the audience have some idea of what is going on. This wasn't bad for me, as I knew what was going on, but some people may find it a bit tricky at the beginning.
The story is coherent, and the characters are well written, and you feel a real empathy for them. The whole film really sucks you into it's world. I don't think I could ask for more than that in a film.
Final Verdict: 9/10 - Better than Star Wars.
