sl_gor Well I went to Gor this past weekend, or as close to Gor as one can get without actually climbing on a spaceship and getting your anus probed along the way by Mork the Ork.
My beloved Free Companion Sue and I traveled off to the Pocono's to spend time with a variety of different people from all walks of life, united by our common love of the John Norman Canon. Well what I quickly learned is something I always expected. We all have different ideas of what "Gor" is, and I'm a stickler to the original ideas with some modications.
I wasn't sure what to expect, having no RL experience in Gor with the expection of some role play an ex girlfriend and I did many years ago - and that lead directly to sex. Not a bad thing (and sex is rarely a bad thing), but not a whole part of what it means to be Gorean. In fact, I guess I was expecting something like Gor on SL. Which truthfully is far from the books and the reality of the modern world. We are, simply, used to chairs. Free and slave alike.
Sue does not know Gorean ways, having a strong dislike of SL and having never read the books. Please understand that she does have a good sense of BDSM ways, and after dating me for 3 or 4 years now; a very good sense of how I understand how a Gorean man acts since I try to combine the underlying philosophy of the books into my everyday life.
Gor to me has always been more about service than actual BDSM, a phrase I've heard tossed about is that Gor is more mental than physicial. A term I would agree with. A Gorean rarely whips a girl for example, where in a BDSM Master/slave relationship, it goes without saying that a slave will be whipped. A Gorean slave seeks to be pleasing because to be found displeasing is a slap to ones ego.
Bits and pieces of Gor filtered through, although it seemed to depend on the particular Master and girl how much. If I had a slave I would have expected the "total Gorean package" from her. Kneeling at my side if I need her. Serving drinks to the free and waiting for dismissal from them.
I would not have expected them to kiss the rim of a glass, but I would have made mine do so. The Books are tricky, what happened on page 35 could be negated by something on page 69 in the same book. But the respect for all free must be there. Sometimes I did not feel that respect or knowledge of the books were there.
Something I'm willing to chalk up to different interpretations. Something I talked about a bit over the weekend, the philosophy of Gor. Where some had given it deep thought and found something true in their own lives. For others, an experiment to find what fit into their own lives. Neither approach is wrong. We all take what we need from any philosophy.
Still though, I expected to be "living by the books" more. Generally though the weekend was a positive experience for both Susan and myself. I would do it again.
