Two characters in search of a country song

Ok, so after miraculously scoring tickets to the second advanced screening of Serenity when so many other fans haven't even been able to see it once, I felt a bit guilty (and geeky, for seeing the same movie on my own... twice), and decided I'd give the ticket to one of my friends instead.

I offered it to scottage, but as he's the only one of our lot with a significant anyone at the moment, he declined, and said he'd wait until it came out in September to see it with his girlfriend.

I... um... may have offered one or two more people, but by that time it was too late to mail it to anyone, and I really did want to see it again, so... Well, I'm awfully glad I did, because not only did I get a much better seat this time, the studio decided to send various members of the cast and crew out to theaters to do Q/A after the screenings, and through some bizarre luck of the draw, we got Nathan Fillion, Yes, none other than Captain Malcolm "space pants" Reynolds himself!!

All I can say is that Joss Whedon knows how to pick his actors, and that if Conan O'brien ever decided to leave his post at Late Night, I think we've found the only other living person who could pull off the string dance.

There was also a 50/50 chance he was going to end up sitting next to me when the film started rolling, since there were only two areas of reserved seats and I sat in the pitiful loner seat next to one of them. Alas, he sat in the one on the opposite side of the theater next to blackgarden (and who can blame him), but I did get what I'm assuming was one of the local reviewers for either The Bee or The Press Tribune, and he ended up laughing and nodding through most of it, so hopefully that means it'll get good reviews come September.

Also, all the little bits that I missed, or felt were slightly convoluted during the last screening, made a lot more sense during the second run. Some of that might have been due to a few small changes in editing I noticed, but I'm sure most of it just comes from being able to see the screen from a reasonable distance, and not being nearly as shocked when _________ and ________ happen to _________ and __________.

Speaking of paying attention to detail, I also noticed that Whedon, that wily fox, still managed to pull off a movie where there isn't sound in space. He deliberately picked shots where the ships were flying in or out of a planet's atmosphere, to kick the surround sound rumbles into overdrive. I just hope it's enough to entertain the more retarded Trekkie and Star Wars nerds who'll yawn and fall asleep if there aren't enough fiery explosions in deep space or get confused if the enemy ships don't fire a different colored laser from good guys.

Here's hoping the movie does well enough to spawn two more sequels, and then somebody will come up with the bright idea of creating a TV spin-off...
