Keep flying...

Wow. I just saw Serenity.

Wait. Don't run away, I promise I'm not going to spoil any plot points or anything but I will say this...

You're either a Firefly fan or you're not.

I'm sure there will be some people out there who see this movie, who haven't watched the series on TV or DVD. Those people will either instantly fall in love with it, or... or they won't. In which case they will probably just wander away completely confused.
Hell, I saw the movie, and I'm still confused by some of the scenes myself.

Long time fans, don't worry. You'll love this movie.
Yes, there is now sound in space (I'm hoping the DVD might have a option to turn that off), and there are one or two nitpicky continuity errors with the original series, but other than that it's a fine ride. I don't think you'll be disappointed. And if no more movies are made, and this is the last we see of Serenity... well, at least it ties up a few loose ends. (though not nearly all of them) I'll also say that Joss Whedon wouldn't be Joss Whedon if he didn't put his characters through pure hell, and even I was feeling more than a little weepy by the very end.

Bigger budget and explosions aside, it's the same characters and humor we've grown to love, and when it finally comes out on DVD, you can display it proudly next to your Firefly boxed set, and think of it more as the 2-part season finale we never got a chance to see.

See, now that wasn't too bad. I promised no spoilers.
I'm sure those will be all over the net by tomorrow morning without my help.

As for the trip itself, well, I ignored my own advice and got to the theater at 9:45, when everybody else had obviously been camped out for quite some time before that. So, I missed out on the cool free crap and got trapped in the very bottom right next to the smelly guy and the kid chomping carmel corn, but I still got to see one of the best movies of the year (not to mention finally having a chance to say hello to one of LJ's most elusive creatures) so I'm a happy camper.

Ooh... but the weekend's not even over!
Not by a long shot.

Tomorrow night is the absolutely positively can't miss show of... at least the next couple of weeks.

We've got the lovable DIDLEY SQUAT, the triumphant semi-return of LGS, and headlining the night's festivities THE DEAD HENSONS. Who are the Dead Hensons you ask? Well only the most ass-kickingest ALL MUPPET SHOW COVER BAND ever!! Yes you heard right... The Muppets (and also technically Sesame Street, and possibly the Firey song from Labyrinth). At any rate, if something small, brightly colored, and made of felt sang it-- they cover it.

The party will be at Old Ironsides, 9:30pm, $8 cover (sorry kids, 21+ only)
So show up, have a great time, and don't even bother trying to pretend that you don't know the words to 'The Rainbow Connection' you big softy...
