“Well, since my baby left me,
I found a new place to dwell.
It’s down at the end of lonely street
At heartbreak hotel.
You make me so lonely baby,
I get so lonely,
I get so lonely I could die.”
says the radio, Presleys silky tones rollin right on through her black-as-night hair. She never really had gotten into the new age stuff, always kept with the good old oldies, Presley, Floyd, and Dylan. Probably why she never had any friends in high school. She liked to talk about her favorite things, and everyone else liked to talk about 7 dimes' newest single, or whatever it was they talked about. She never payed attention.
Thats why she's all alone, on I-95, heading to wherever the wind takes her, listening to good old oldies. She's pushin' forty now, been married more times than she could count. Never any children come out of it, they never lasted long neither. Just a lot of hearts broken and memories she's sooner forget than remember. A lot of them, matter of fact. Wasn't that she'd “love em and leave em”. All of her husbands were wonderful men, strong, handsome. But mean, the sorta man that gets those looks from passerbys, the looks that make it obvious they are wondering whether or not he's gonna mug em. Thats what made her leave all those times, the thought that she wasn't safe, that this man she was with wasn't going to stick around. Ironic really, she'd leave before they even had a chance to get tired of her.
So far, she'd been staying in seedy motels, the ones that smell of sex and vileness. She felt almost like she was back at home. But now it was getting late, she'd been drivin' for nearly 6 hours now, with nothing but golden fields and the occasional cow to see.
David, the last one, he'd been special. He'd realized that it wasn't permanent. He had asked if he could come with her when she left. She lied, she said that isn't true baby, i'm not leaving you for nothing. She meant then, too. She tried longer this time, she stayed with David nearly 5 years. But that itch in her butt, that tick in her neck. They told her it was time to move on. David begged her not to go, pleaded with her to please just stay a while longer. She said the same thing she did before, It isn't true baby, i'm not leaving.
She almost fooled herself into thinking that she loved him, had almost sold herself on the idea, in fact. But she knew. She knew then, and she knew now. She'd feel better once she was back on the road, going devil knows where, listening to the good old oldies.
Always do.
