I'm more familiar with the 80's Soft Cell version, but after a listen or two it's obvious Gloria Jones was groundbreaking while everyone is just a copycat.
And just a quick Google later, apparently The Pussycat Dolls have peed all over it. The Marilyn Manson cover is interesting, and the video is a nice gangsta rap parody.

I think the Soft Cell version made the song a staple, but if the original had no legs, nobody would have covered it.
Take the CCR version of I Put A Spell On You. It's cannon, and almost nothing like the Hawkins original, but there you have it. The original was a lightning strike, Simone was the flash and CCR the thunder that followed. BTW, you may want to check out the cover of this done by one Natacha Atlas. Man, who HASN'T done it?
I guess my aural tastebuds haven't quite recovered since I made peace with Rhianna gyrating all over Tainted Love.
