8th Struggle

[Bright and early in the morning, Guts is heading out of town. His room back at the apartment building is empty; everything he has is going with him, not that that's much to begin with.

He makes a brief stop in at the stables to give 'his' horse a scratch before continuing on his way.]

I can't believe we dug holes near the stables again.

I was setting traps for the bad guy! And it was 3 o'clock in the morning so nobody would ride a horse into the pit unless they were up to no good.

Here comes someone now. If their horse breaks its legs, we're gonna be in a lot of trouble.

It might be the murderer! Shhhhhh! . . . . . . . . . . . . Huh? Mr. Guts?

...what are you two up to over there?

We're catching murderers with pitfalls! You should probably keep to the left.

[Guts dutifully sidesteps.]

Where are you going so early in the morning, Mr. Guts?

Outta town for a while, I guess.

[Takeru is a simple child, in several ways.]

[Whether he realises it or not, that's part of what Guts likes about him.]

Yeah. Don't get yourself killed while I'm away, all right?

Of course I won't! I'm gonna catch the murderer before you're back and we'll put him in jail!

[He raises his hand to them in a salute/wave and begins to hum lightly to himself, feeling better centred than he has since he got here.]

[onwingsofhope]

[They wave until he is a speck in the distance before returning their attentions to the hole.]

I still can't hold a shovel, so I think you'll have to fill it in the rest of the way.

Maybe I could just put up signs . . . .
