nice -- are you familiar with the sedgwick theory about the role of female characters around two males? it changed the way I...kind of look at everything, actually

im not, actually... where does she say it? sounds interesting.

I don't remember if the theory had a name to it or anything like that, I just remember flipping through this literary magazine once (I felt like a snobby little fuckhead for doing that, by the way) and read about it. To oversimplify and condense it, it said that the female character is there to take away from the homoeroticism in the relationship between two men. One of the examplies she cites is that the character of Maid Marion was added to the Robin Hood myth much later because it was always just assumed that Robin and all the Merry Men were butt fucking in the woods together, which is obviously a big no-no.

I'm not sure if this is true in *all* cases, because if so it kind of invalidates any female secondary character in literature, but whenever I think about stories that involve two prominent men, it does always kind of make sense.

epistomology of the closet is kind of a good place to start. i've only skimmed bits and pieces of her other stuff, but it's always been high on my "things to read eventually list"
