Last night, 9/3/24 at about 10:30pm, I heard a commotion out in the alley right outside my house - not an unusual thing so I basically ignored it.
It sounded like kids hooting and howling and riding skateboards, something that happens fairly often around here.
Then I heard the slam of the gate to the yard my house shares with two others.
This alerted me because I thought maybe whoever was making noise actually came into the yard.
So I went out to investigate.
Outside I found one of my neighbors on the other side of the fence looking around.
When he saw me he came back into the yard and I noticed he had a rifle slung over his shoulder.
I asked what was going on and he said he heard the commotion in the alley and went out with his rifle to "make sure they don't come into the yard".
I asked if the rifle was loaded and he said there was no bullet in the chamber but he could easily have one there if he needed it, implying that there were bullets in the rifle but just not in the chamber.
I told him that capital punishment was not a reasonable penalty to pay for just making noise in the alley.
He said he wanted to scare the kids away and/or protect himself if they attacked him.
Nobody has ever come into this yard to attack me in the 24 years I have lived here.
I know this guy for almost 10 years and I have found him to be an emotionally unstable individual, at best.
His recent aquisition of a firearm raises the ante on his craziness and instability.

I am reminded about the old saying:
"to a kid with a hammer, everything looks like a nail".
To which:
To a idiot with a gun, everything looks like a personal threat.

Then I heard about the latest school shooting in Georgia this morning.
