Ok, follow this:
The end of Back To The Future Part II: The Delorean is zapped by lightning in 1955 and Doc Brown (1985 edition) is taken to 1885. Doc Brown '85 then stores the Delorean and sends a letter to Marty in 1955 via Western Union.
Back To The Future Part III: Marty and Doc Brown (1955 edition) retrieve the Delorean and repair it, and Marty travels back to 1885. On arrival, the Delorean's fuel line gets cut by the indians. The entire reason that they need to use the steam train is that, as Doc Brown '85 says, there's no gas stations around for 100 years.
But hang on...
At this point, there are actually TWO Deloreans present in 1885: The one that Doc Brown flew in with (Delorean I), and the one Marty drove in with (Delorean II). Now, ok, I get that Delorean I is fried and moreover needs to stay in storage until Marty retrieves it in 1955.
But... could they not steal some gas from it? Just enough to get Delorean II up to 88MPH and get home before Maddog Tanner kills either one of them?
