I'm in love. I'll explain my swooning, but first the context: The past few weeks has seen a strange yet rapid growth of my musical tastes (I just discovered Goth music! I know, I suck!). One of many pleasant little tracks on the Steampunk compliation
An Age Remembered started me down the path of Folk-inspired Indie music (neo-Balkan), and I have since come to adore the sound of one Zach Condon and his band
Beirut. There are reviews out there that do a better job describing what the band is like, so I won't bother beyond the words "gypsy-inspired". I started acquiring some of their songs from
The Flying Club Cub and then
Gulag Orkestar before I realized that I liked most of the latter album, so I got it the
legit way. While the album can't quite make up for this one song I've been searching for forever* (LOL), it is an excitingly refreshing find. I only wish I could sing like him in that rich baritone. I'd croon all night long, serenading my neighbors wiht my melodies. Ah...
Maybe I should get voice lessons.
Anyway, because the world ought to experience the pleasure my ears are experiencing, here are some samplings:
•
St. Apollonia: The sample cuts off before the waltz comes on. Does not do the song justice. I suggest getting the
Steampunk compilation (#2) which has this song in there, mislabeled as "The Flying Club Cup".
•
Mount Wroclai (Idle Days): Listening to this makes me inexplicably happy. My ears love it. Folkish chanting. Yum.
•
The Long Island Sound: Haven't heard more than the sample, but it sounds like it's all instrumental.
I do have other tastes in music, this just happens to be the upchuck of my Neo-Balkan binge.
* It's a stretch, but here goes: does anyone know the name of the song in the '90s computer game Where in the World is Carmen San Diego when you go to Greece? I tried searching the interwebs, but the closest thing I could find that barely hinted at it might be a popular Greek fishermen's (folk) song. Anyone know of popular Greek folk songs?
