The series re-imaging project
I have had this idea with me now for many weeks. And I am just about ready to make it a reality. I just need some skilled hands and the thoughts of fans.
Now, I'm a gigantic Gurren Lagann fan. I enjoy every last bit of information I can get about characters, mechs, story elements, every adaption, just about everything. I watched the series over and over again, and I can say the same about the films and the manga, shit, even the game. My fandom has given me the motivation to start this project.
Here's what I am posting about. When the movies came out, they were awesome. I loved them. But my thoughts were the same as many others', especially for the first film. There was a lot of things left out that could have been stuck in them to make it feel more whole. So I figured that if I got a team of some skilled people together, we can make it work. What I want to do is edit the TV series and place in parts from the movie. I've thought long and hard about what could be done, and specific scenes that would be favorable to edit. I was mainly inspired by the Manga's in-depth detail to all the characters and story.
The major things I felt that the first movie lacked were the scenes of Kamina finding his father's bones, Rossiu's village situation, Gurren Lagann vs. Enkidu and FLAMING CHARIOT KIIIIICCCKKKUUUU, and finally Viral pleading to Lordgenome about what humans are. That was something about the second movie that puzzled most of my friends who I introduced through the movies, why Viral is immortal. Not to mention movie 2 got rid of Rossiu PAWNCH and Kittan taking a shotgun out of his ass. I plan to keep all of this stuff in of course.
Here is what I need:
Someone who can edit a few frames in the series with photoshop and make it look completely natural.
Someone who can do audio editing. A prime example as to what could be needed is taking dialogue from the series and making it sound like they are using the gunmen communication system.
I am already a skilled enough video editor for the job, so that shouldn't be needed unless I run into trouble.
The last thing I need is mutual agreement from the people participating in this project, and input from fans as to what should be done.
My ideas thus far:
From the start, I want to add in scenes from early in the first movie and beyond that just had better sounding dialogue. That will go on throughout this whole project, and will be the easiest thing to doctor.
Second thing I plan to doctor is episode 4. I am planning on waiting for Parallel Works 2's Kittan Zero video to fit in scenes I think I could fit in with their backstory. Despite it not looking like the video itself is canon, there should be something we can work with, considering Kittan's village was destroyed by Viral in the manga. I also wanted to know if everyone thinks the point of that episode, "I'm gonna thoughtlessly throw boulders at you so you can combine with me stylishly" should be taken out.
Another idea I was thinking about for Kittan's first appearance would be to take the manga pages and perform the scene in the same way the FLCL manga scene was done. Though I haven't taken much thought into that. Just an idea I'm throwing out there.
Maybe some minor edits for Episode 7, such as the reflections of Simon and Yoko's communications reflecting in Kamina's glasses.
Something I thought of was adding in the music video factor that was introduced in the Parallel Works and the first movie. The scenes from episode 14 and the beginning of episode 15 I thought would be good to make into a video montage using the track used at the beginning of Movie 2: Just stay quiet and get fired up ~ God in Heaven. I thought of this mainly to accommodate the small Yoko M Tank fight scene which I wouldn't be able to edit into the episode 15 fight scene which uses Happily Ever After. The audio would just sound scrambled if I tried. It wouldn't be good. I wanted to use both tracks due to the sense of importance the sound of the first track has, and the scene from episode 15 had more content and was generally better received by fans.
For the same episode, 15, I plan to keep the fall of Teppelin and building of Kamina city scene from the movie. If things go how I see it, then that should be the end of the episode.
In episode 20, Leyte reveals King Kittan and the Dayakkaizer after Kittan pulls a shotgun out of his ass. This scene is specifically what I want someone skilled with photoshop for. In those very few scenes, I think it's very possible to edit each frame of the Dayakkaizer and make it look like the Yoko M Tank. At that point in the movie, the Dayakkaizer was pretty much forgotten due to lack of pilot and the Yoko M Tank took over. If this can be done, then that'd be awesome.
The major thing I really wanted to work on was Rossiu and Super Galaxy Gurren Lagann. I want to keep the whole Rossiu PAWNCH scene in. That whole episode in general really gave Rossiu more character development than he got in the film. As for SGGL, I want to keep the anti-spiral controlled Cathedral Lazengann scene in, but when they take control of it, changing it back to it's ship form would give the rising from the Death Spiral Sea scene more impact, as it did in the series.
From that point, I'd like to fit in that specific scene into the series, as I thought it had more impact on the situation (but that's just me). From that point, I'd like to keep going from where the series continued, as the SGGL showed off all it's fancy attacks and everything. All it did in the movie was crunch the Asyutanga's face and cause BIG SPLODAN and use it's sunglasses attack.
That's quite a bit of what I covered in my head. I'm sure there's lots more to be improved on. But I just wanted to let everyone know for who is interested in helping and watching. I will gladly accept any input I receive from everyone! If this project gets taken off the ground, I will release the episodes here and probably on /m/ on megaupload. And that's all.
