With heavy lidded eyes I traversed the ether and somehow found my way back to you. I recall feeling the warmth of your fingers as they traced their path back to the old spots and back to the memory of us.
It was ecstasy. For a moment. But then that moment passed, and it was like you never knew.
All the beautiful words I had written with extensive prose and eloquent iterations to absolve us of all the impossible darkness we had done to each other.
It never happened.
And then the atmosphere, where only moments ago had shone brilliant and bespeckled with thousands of pieces of gold confetti and rich warm to the touch hues, grew cold, grew hard, grew dark.
I knew then that for you nothing had changed.
Jolted, I tried to pull away. But you, oh you. You pulled me closer. And I knew this would hurt.
Later, when I found Her in a room of tomorrow, I stood over clutter. Surrounded by the mess of life I tried to get Her to listen. I tried to get Her to comprehend. But She casually shook Her head, because it didn’t matter.
“Don’t you know,” She said. “Life is magical and amazing and so full of possibility, but now? Now we have work to do.”
Then She handed me a black apron.
As I slipped it on, I was collared.
