I had the feeling This would be a romance Starting out of my league
As a light rain coloured The window of a small cafe
Opening my closet Late at night It's a one-man show
The stole's overdoing it but Leave it out and I can at least look the part
On the fashionable streets Where we're supposed to meet I'm a fish out of water
Is there something off with me? Their eyes won't meet mine
No matter what you wear It's always Stunning and very much like you
Walking beside you Makes it obvious I tried too hard with my outfit
Let's have some tea or something At that cafe That goes well with bossa nova music
During the Short break when you've left your seat The number of sighs
That spill from me Shows just how much I want to get closer to you
Raised in this part of town You wouldn't understand
How I can't even hide The differences in my intonation well1
Scrimping and saving I finally got my hands on Trendy Louboutin
But in reality I don't live up to it
Sometimes you'll give me That look that lights up your whole face And I want to see it so much
That I'll overcome This atmosphere I'm not good with Just to frequent these streets again
Sooner than later It'll wear me down but That's not your fault either
After letting go Of your hand The number of sighs
That spill from me Shows just how much I want to get closer to you
It's all the fault of that rainy day For leading me astray To a small cafe2
I may not be as well-bred Nor as well-read As you are
But at the very least My feelings won't lose out to yours
Tomorrow I'll probably come to like you even more But
Tomorrow Will I dress up with Yet another layer of Timidity?3
No matter what you wear It's always Stunning and very much like you
Walking beside you Makes it obvious My passable outfit suits me too4
Let's have some tea or something At that cafe That goes well with bossa nova music
During the Short break when you've left your seat The number of smiles
That spill from me Just might show how much I've gotten closer to you
Pretty straightforward. The narrator's a guy from some small town who moved to a big city, most likely Tokyo, where he fell in love with a girl who lives in one of its most stylish districts.
1 He prolly spoke in his hometown's dialect before moving here, so the way he speaks makes it easy to tell he's from Somewhere Less Cool.
2 Where he first met her. See verse #1.
3 Trying to fit in by dressing + behaving like somebody he's not when he should just have the courage to be himself.
4 It's obvious his outfit's nowhere near as fashionable as hers, but at least it suits him well now / he's being himself.
