I talked with Anton Peterson about building a ramp at our house to make it wheelchair accessible so that Ginger can spend her last weeks here at home with the assistance of home health care.

Anton asked for some measurements so here's some rough estimates.

Our neighbor's driveway leads right up to the stairs on the side of our house. Ginger would be able to be wheeled down the ramp and get right into the car so that we could continue dialysis in order to keep her comfortable. Even in her weakened state this will be well within her capabilities.

If she becomes so weak or her pain is too great to make the trip, then we'd discontinue treatment knowing that the choice will lead to her passing in less than two weeks after that time.

All measurements were estimated using a 11 X 8.5 inch piece of paper. I couldn't find where the measuring tape was packed.

The door to the house opens on a 4 foot by 3.5 foot landing. Each of the 3.5 sides has a set of five steps leading down.

There is a 1 inch wide & tall sill under the door. The posts that hold the railing opposite the door are 3 inches wide.

(3.5 feet landing) - (1 inch sill) - 3 inch railing = 26 inches of clear space on the landing.

The landing is 3 feet above the ground.

The north steps have about 12 feet of concrete platform extending from them.

The south steps have about 6 feet of clearance before a corner wall would interfere with manuevering a chair up a ramp.

The storm door opens outward from the house and the interior door opens inward.

If the ramp is put on the north side of the steps, the storm door would have to be removed as there would not be enough clearance to manuever a wheelchair around it.

I will leave a sketch of these measurements in our mailbox by the front door.
