I'm amazed at the vast improvement of childrens' behavior at the con this year. Knock on wood--it's only been day 1 of the event.
I'm not a kid-hater by any stretch of the imagination. Being beloved by children seems to be my only superpower.
What really impressed me was what happend when I playing a game of Agricola in the gaming suite. The boardgame has a medieval farming theme and included a crapload of wooden and cardboard counters. A pair of freckle-faced sisters with Minor con badges showed up a few minutes after the game started and volunteered their services in organizing the game tokens in neat little piles and appointed themselves as co-bankers.
Perhaps the game might have ended a whole five minutes earlier without the girls' contributions, but none of the players seemed to mind their presence.
The really impressive part of the game was when the kids' father was responsible enough to come over to ask if they were BOTHERING us!?!
Holy crap! I did I just encounter a responsible parent at a convention?
If I'd been more on the ball I would have tried to take some blurry photos or at least a plaster footprint cast.
And then their mom showed up 20 minutes later to check on them again and I just threw my hands up in the air. I know that by reporting these events as factual I've blown my credibility as an objective witness all to hell.
