Mercenaries

Sep 08, 2008 23:47

These, in the day when heaven was falling,

The hour when earth's foundations fled,

Followed their mercenary calling

And took their wages and are dead.

Their shoulders held the sky suspended;

They stood, and earth's foundations stay;

What God abandoned, these defended,

And saved the sum of things for pay.

This poem was written by a British poet after an officer of the German Army said the British soldiers were paid so much, they could be nothing more than mercanaries. Printed ~1944.

This is what most of the world thinks of US Soldiers now. I felt it is a good poem to remember, considering the day coming up. Not just for US soldiers, but for all the armed forces of the world who answered our call to rid the world of terrorism and oppression.
