Mockingbirds

When we lived on Stanley Street, we always enjoyed the mockingbird that claimed our backyard as his territory. It seemed to us that he had an extremely diversified repertoire, and the songs he imitated were very recognizable. Kate told me earlier this spring that another gifted mockingbird is singing there this year; either the same one or possibly a descendant.

Kate takes Cherokee to work with her when she grooms dogs in her shop at the old house, and Cherokee gets to play with our renter's little dogs, Tito and Chachi. Well, of course, through the course of the day, she or Angie (our renter) is constantly calling Cherokee for one thing or another. And Cherokee comes to a particularly melodious version of her name... CHEEEEER-o-keeeeeeeee.

The other day when she pulled up to her shop and let Cherokee out, she heard the Mockingbird sing CHEEER-o-keeeeee, or at least a reasonable version of it, recognizable enough that it made Cherokee look around, wondering who was calling her name.

Mockingbirds are cool. This mockingbird is exceptionally cool.
