Lucy

I was driving home from my parents' house on Sunday when I pulled up to an intersection. I wasn't paying much attention to a car parked on the road on the other side of the highway...  just a woman interacting with a little dog next to her vehicle.  I turned the corner, and it belatedly occurred to me that the woman had been shooing the dog away from her vehicle. I thought, "No way. No way would someone be dumping their dog on what was going to be the coldest night of fall (almost winter) so far! No one could be that cruel and insensitive."  But I turned around and went back anyway. The woman and her SUV were long gone, but sure enough, the little dog was still there beside the road.

I was so mad I could spit nails, and I truly do hope there is a special level of Hell for people who abuse animals, including abandoning them.

But, I called to the little puppy, and she came right to me.

So, now we have Lucy. She's probably around 7 months old, and she looks like a Beagleman (a cross between a Doberman and a Beagle). She's very sweet tempered and well-behaved. Aside from the fact that she hasn't been house-broken (and was, in fact, afraid of coming inside, initially), we can't imagine why anyone would have abandoned her. When she rides in the car, she just sits in the seat and stares out the window like the perfect little passenger. She doesn't bark at things. She does like to chase chickens, which is a bit problematic, but she doesn't chase the cats inside. She comes when we call. Temperamentally, she's quite the opposite of bossy, paranoid Sara.

So far, she and Sara have been getting along. We did have one incident where Sara bit Lucy's ear because of a disagreement over a chew-bone, but we've been quite pleased overall with how well they have been doing. They even enjoying playing together, which is nice, and Lucy doesn't push her luck too far once Sara has had enough.

We haven't found anyone willing to take Lucy, so it looks like we're stuck with her. But, she's going to be a good little dog.
