Golden Compass

I rented this movie last weekend, but I forgot to post my thoughts on it.
The movie Golden Compass fist began as a book. A series of three books I believe, haven't read any of them so my opinions are based solely on the movie. But first though, I would like to point out the the whole issue about the movie being anit-religous, or whatever is was, isn't something to be looked heavely upon. The book is built in a fantasy world. Things will be different simply because it's fantasy, it's suppose to be different.

Anyways, back to the movie. I don't have the list of actors/actresses (and I'm to lazy to go looking for them), but the cast worked well together. The little girl fit nicely in the style of character she played. Very Annie if you ask me. Except Miss Hanagin didn't end up being Annie's mother.
Storyline wise, the movie was okay. Kinda kiddy, but it did begin as a child's book so I'm not too surprised. Over all though, I liked the story. Kid discovers the one person who is like family ends up in troule so of course she has to try and help. Off she goes to help and along the way meets allies and enemies. Not really sure I understand how the compass thing works, but go with the flow.
The graphics in the movie were brilliant! Loved the whole concept of the animal being the soul or whatever. And the polar bear, he was awesome. Graphics were brilliant during his fight with the other bear. Couldn't believe he tore off the lower jaw of the other polar bear. Very shocking and yet totally cool at the same time.
The only issues I didn't like about the movie, WAY to simple. A compass that know all simply by arranging the arrows and then staring into it. I got the impression of a wannabe crystal ball. Coulda been worked on a little. Maybe the images were to blury for my tastes, who knows.

Over all rating: 6 out of 10

movie
