Shit I used to know this in better detail. Assuming they're all 15 years old at the anime events.... Heero started very young, as far back as he has memories, if you count his time with Odin Lowe. If you don't, I want to say he was about 8 when he met J. So that would make his Gundam-specific training stint about 7 years long (AC 188-195). Duo was something like 12 when he sneaked into Prof G's hangar. From AC 192-195, so about 3 years training, which is actually shortest next to Quatre. I think his street smarts just make up for lack of formal training. Trowa was doctored into a violent lifestyle through the mercenaries also as far back as he has memories, but there is no info on when he started working as a mechanic on the Gundam or when he actually took over as pilot (as far as I can tell). Quatre's training was the shortest, and the only timestamp I can find is that AC 193 is bit before he was convinced to pilot Sandrock. So less than two years. And I don't think they give a timeline for Wufei's training, though if I do remember right it was long and planned out that he would be the pilot (not happenstance like 01-04).

So Heero and Wufei actually had the longest training periods. Their individual gundam.wikia pages had good basic run-downs of their episode zeros. You could also look for manga scans if you want to be sure, it's not like they're long reads lol.

There is some implication that his time as the pilot was hasty.

Deikem was bankrolling the gundam and intended for his son to pilot it. Now sure they probably didn't talk every night but as some point the crazy old koot was bound to notice that "Trowa" was NOT his son. So that would have to be very close to the start of the series.

wasn't the switch from Trowa to "Trowa" covered in Endless Waltz somehow?

I believe it was shortly after crazy-Trowa shows No-name the picture of his niece.

The theory that Meiran was suppose to be the pilot was fandom created. It's probably safe to assume she wanted to be, or that she would have gladly done it if it was offered to her. But I'm pretty sure Wufei was the plan from day one.

It is probably a good assumption that Trowa didn't actually take over as Heavyarms' pilot until very shortly before Operation Meteor was enacted. But considering his observant personality, and the fact that he was involved somewhat in the whole production already, I would guess he probably paid some attention to the training the real Trowa was going through. And again, he had prior combat training to build on, so he wouldn't need as much formal training beyond how to actually operate the Gundam.

And actually, he might not have even needed operational instruction, considering he was helping build the thing.

We seem to be in full agreement here.

Like I said at the beginning in terms of experience that got them ready to pilot, Trowa's would be the longest.

If it's defined more narrowly to time spent preparing after being formally appointed the pilot, then you have him with the least amount of time.

i was looking for the time with their doctors. Heero's the only one with a good timestamp. i thought Duo was 8 or 9 during the Massacre and he ended up with G a year or two after. Trowa's is kinda blurry with him being a mechanic on Heavyarms too. i don't know if Wufei's training to be the next head of the clan would count.

Those dates with the doctors are pulled from gundam.wikia Episode Zero recaps, so they should be accurate. That puts Duo meeting Prof G and the Sweepers in AC 192, when he was roughly twelve. Same with the description of Trowa being a mechanic, which is where he met the real Trowa Barton, though there is no timestamp for that. There isn't anything definitively saying Wufei was always in training to be the pilot of Shenlong, but considering Meiran's frustration with his lack of desire to fight, and his ease of taking up the Gundam during the fight in which she dies, its a good assumption he had prior training. There's also no talking of anyone else ever being planned to take the spot. It's an assumption, but from the evidence we have it's probably right.
