As others have noted, the Gundam Wing fandom at its height was pretty much a canonical example of fan-rape (no, really--there's even a dedicated essay on the subject. It's (thankfully) settled down, but it was not only bad (let's see, just HOW many crossovers can we do? How about throwing in five Mary Sue chicks with their own Gundams to kick OZ ass and grope Duo's?) but on occasion frankly disturbing (as others have noted, there was a *lot* of fairly disturbing non-con slash involving Duo as a victim

Don't forget the Harry Potter fandom. I think they're the only ones that can beat out Gundam Wing in terms of crazy.

True--and, disturbingly, one of the more popular categories of Bad Fic Involving Gundam Wing Characters includes Harry Potter x Gundam Wing crossovers. (I am not making this up. You could well say it's the worst of both worlds.)

I'm actually still in the GW fandom, though I have come to realize that I missed the worst period of fanon cliche, since I didn't join in until roughly four years ago. Have had plenty of interesting discussions about how GW has evolved as a fandom throughout the years, with parallels to tendencies I see in this fandom. I was particularly curious about the whole NCS fic thing. GW was infamous for the badly written gratituous rape fics of its early days, this I know. But those of you who have taken a peek at the G00 kink meme know that the request for NCS fics (particularly involving Tieria) are quite abundant. The difference appears to be that the qualify of said fics are much higher than the early GW fanfics. I am wondering, myself, if the NCS fic thing is a stage that many fandoms go through; will perhaps this fandom reach a point in a few years when every respected fanfic writer with a posse of devoted sheep to back them up will shun NCS fics, declaring that they per definition are gratituous and OOC, or is it that the fact that G00

Nah, that won't happen until fics start popping up with extreme Marina-bashing (i.e. turning her into a kidnapper/murderer/rapist/whatever).

That said, this is one post that I do hope gets deleted. Considering it only points to some counterproductive immaturity, instead of the supposed doujinshi scans.

LOL When all of the female characters start to take a beating you know you're in trouble. Personally I wasn't a fan of Relena because her character was so predictable and unrealistic (even for the universe of gundam). Marina is an intelligent character though so I hope the Yaoi fangirls leave her alone.

00 as a whole is a bit more intelligent (I think) in terms of plot and character development than Gundam Wing so hopefully it won't get the hordes of ignorant fans that wing did. Although with art from Yun Kouga it's sure to draw in some crazy BL fans.

It's been years since I was involved in that horror, but I can sum it up as:

*Ridiculous, ridiculous levels of Relena-bashing
*Fanfics that twisted the characters' personalities to unrecognisible extremes
*Fans who hadn't even watched the show who assumed that the twisted characterisations mentioned above were canon
*Violent pairings wars, mainly between the Heero/Duo and Heero/Relena crowds IIRC
*Yaoi fans who constantly paraded messages like "keep an open mind!" on their sites while turning around and bashing het

Special mention goes to some particularly infamous fen I mentioned below. Neko-chan was pretty much the definitive Relena-bashing yaoi fangirl who bore her fangs at anyone who so much as wanted to defend poor Relena, while Sephiroth was basically just a loony fanfic writer whose stuff mainly consisted of wildly OOC Duo-rapefests.

Now you know how relatively well-off 00 fandom is. XD;

I neither like nor dislike Relena and didn't not that she was so bashed, since I've only started watching Wing some months ago... (glad I was too young when the fandom boomed)
I was really stunned when I googled Neko-chan and Relena; it was entertaining to read through those anti essays. Many of the reasons why they hated her were totally baseless and utterly ridiculous LOL.

Furthermore, I'm kinda glad that I haven't read any OOC Gundam Wing fanfic, sounds kinda creepy people characterized the characters ;D

It was seriously that bad? Wow, makes me happy I was too young to understand any of that, and lack of a computer was probably even better.
