CHARACTER
✧ NAME: Mami Tomoe
✧ SERIES: Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica
✧ HISTORY:
here!✧ TIMELINE: Episode 3, right after launching her final attack at Charlotte.
✧ PERSONALITY: Mami Tomoe could be summed up as a "big sister" type character. In her first appearance in the series, she saves then-powerless humans Sayaka and Madoka from a witch's barrier using her magic. Even this early on, it is easy to see that Mami has lots of experience in being a Puella Magi. Her fighting style is refined and showy, demonstrating basically what a generic magical girl is. Now that Sayaka and Madoka have met Kyuubey (the being that contracts girls to become Puellae Magi), Mami takes it up as her responsibility to mentor the girls and show them just how witch-hunting is done.
As we learn more about her, Mami is shown to have values that differ from other Puellae Magi. While other girls choose to be selfish and view their fellow magical girls as competition for Grief Seeds, Mami fights because she wants to have peace in the world and keep people safe. Unfortunately, fighting with this in mind usually isn't the ideal for a Puella Magi to use her full potential, but Mami doesn't seem to care about that. This is even reflected in her theme,
Credens Justitiam (translated to 'Believing in Justice").
Even though Mami looks like she's made from smiles and warm feelings on the outside, there is a bit of a dark side to her. When Homura confronts her, Mami views her as someone who wants to compete to collect Grief seeds. She responds to this quite boldly; by saying that she'll let her go, but she'll kill Homura if they cross paths in that manner again. Mami thinks of her values as being the absolute right and just ones, and does not tolerate someone trying to interfere with her or get in her way. You could say she's a bit closed-minded, but it's a bit justified in her situation (since she has no idea how important harboring Grief Seeds is).
Moving on, there is another side to this girl's happy and sisterly facade. Towards the end of her appearances, it is revealed that the wish she made to become a Puella Magi was to save herself from a fatal car accident which killed her whole family. As such, she became an orphan once the wish was granted. Despite this, Mami openly states that she'd rather live like she does then die like that. She appears to have no regrets in her decision... but yes, that is dismissed as incorrect later on. In truth, Mami is actually quite lonely. Call her a Stepford Smiler, if you wish.
Once alone with Madoka (who has told her she wants to become a Puella Magi just for the sake of being useful), Mami has a bit of a breakdown. Her smile finally shatters, and she confesses that "there's nothing good about becoming a Puella Magi!". With the responsibility of fighting witches taking up all her time and the lack comrades, Mami finds herself isolated from growing up as a regular teenager. She's forced herself to act strong and tough to hide the fact that she's actually quite sad from herself. However, with Madoka's promise to fight by her side once she contracts, Mami finally believes that she won't be alone any longer; she begins to finally develop a sense of hope.

Mami's Apartment SAMPLES
✧ FIRST PERSON:
here!✧ THIRD PERSON:
It was one of those nights. Mami had returned from yet another witch hunt, hurt and alone. There was a deep gash on her arm that even her magic couldn't fully repair. She had to nurse before school tomorrow, but it was already so late into the night.... but now was just not the time to sleep. She got out her first aid kit and sat on her couch.
After using some of her magic to numb the pain and close the wound a little, there was still some blood seeping through the cut. She sighed, grabbing a roll of bandages to wrap around it. when it was nicely dressed, she smiled.... but it was a sad, and lonely one. Everything just hurt, on the outside and the inside. Was this really a good way to live?
She was the only one living in this huge apartment, and it had been that way for so long. Why wasn't she used to it by now? She felt like such an idiot. A Puella Magi shouldn't be phased by something like this.
Before she knew it, the tears began to well up and fall. Why did her parents have to die? Why didn't she save them instead of herself when she had the chance? Why couldn't she have friends like regular girls her age? Why did being a Puella Magi mean a life of complete isolation and pain?
These were questions that always haunted her, but ones that she had to ignore in favour of fighting for the good of others. That was just how it was.
Suddenly, Mami felt a warm hand on her shoulder. She turned her head with a teary blink, and saw two adults sitting on either side of her: a man and a woman.
"...Mom? Dad? No... it can't-!"
The words were taken from her mouth, in complete shock. They had died in a car accident! How could they be here now? She had to be going crazy.
The two simply smiled. Her father kept his hand on her shoulder, while her mother lay her hand on top of her daughter's. It felt warm yet light to Mami, almost as if it was an illusion.
The young teenager wiped her eyes and sniffled, before hearing another voice. "Mami-san, don't cry!"
Looking up again to find the source of the voice, she saw another two figures now standing in front of her; a girl with pink hair and a girl with blue hair.
"Hey, I thought you were supposed to be our mentor! Come on, you can't be like that." the blue haired girl with a smile. "Don't you think she's being uncool, Madoka?"
Madoka smiled at the blue haired girl, then at Mami and nodded. "Well, she's been through a lot... but Sayaka-chan is right, Mami-san. You don't need to cry. You're not alone, see? You have all of us!"
After another look around at the room that was now full with people, Mami nodded and for the first time, really smiled.
"Yes... you're right. You're all right. I'm not alone anymore!"
---------
That happy scene that Mami's spirit was experiencing was far from anything of truth. Back in the real world, the actual Madoka and Sayaka watched in horror as their mentor was devoured by a witch. Her parents were still dead. She was still alone.
But when you're dead, maybe it's okay to play make-believe.
