It was Kyo's first Valentine's Day alone.

How depressing.

He'd never imagined that Yuki would actually leave him. They were different, sure, but that didn't mean they couldn't come to an agreement. Okay, so he'd been gone a lot lately, but he was training. He was a fighter. She didn't want a fighter, she wanted a schoolboy. He hadn't been a schoolboy for years. She wanted more public affection, he liked to keep his distance. She liked to tease, play hot and cold, and he just wanted to know where they stood.

He'd found out exactly where they stood as he reluctantly returned the Christmas gift he'd bought for her. Now, he was spending a couples' holiday alone in a bar, nursing a beer. Shit, even the bartender was giving him sympathetic looks.

He wasn't anywhere near drunk, or even buzzed, but Kyo decided abruptly that it was time to go. He struggled into his winter coat, sneering at the snow outside as he paid for the one beer he'd gotten to have. He shoved his hands in his pockets and wandered aimlessly down the sidewalk, opposite the direction of his apartment. Maybe he'd get lucky and-

“I'm sorry,” he apologized automatically, stepping back to allow the person he'd collided with to pass.

To his surprise, the person didn't move. “Kusanagi? This is unexpected.”

That voice, he'd recognize anywhere. “Yagami. Not tonight, okay? Just... pretend you didn't see me.” He wasn't in the mood to fight, though he'd do it if he had to. Maybe just once, the red-haired man would respect his wishes and leave him alone.

Iori didn't exactly back off, but for once, he had nothing smartass to say, and Kyo looked up in surprise. Iori was studying him intently, and Kyo was shocked to see something that looked vaguely like sympathy there.

“Do you have plans tonight?”

“Wh-what?” Kyo replied, thoroughly confused.

“Plans, Kyo. Do you have them, or were you just planning to wander the streets all night?”

The statement caught Kyo off guard, and he glanced down at the snow covered ground and laughed, wryly. “Actually, my plans were to drink myself into oblivion, but apparently a guy can't drink alone today. Who knew?” Part of him thought that he should be ashamed, whining to Iori like they were friends. The other part of him said fuck it, he knows everything about you anyway. What more do you want?

“Hm,” Iori murmured. “I was just going home to watch a good, gory movie-one based on this holiday, actually. I thought that perhaps a little blood and guts would help quell the distaste.”

“Not a Valentine's person?” Kyo asked with a smirk. “I'm not surprised.”

“Actually, I just believe that romance is not limited to one day per year,” Iori said, with an if you must know sort of attitude. “If you truly care for a person, the calendar shouldn't matter.”

He kind of had a point. The fact that Iori Yagami spent any time at all thinking of romance shocked Kyo enough that he forgot about his own self-pity for a minute or two.

“Anyway,” Iori continued smoothly, like he hadn't stopped discussing plans, “I do, actually, have beer at my apartment. I know you're surprised, a guy like me having human sensibilities.”

“Yagami, nothing about you comes as a surprise anymore.” A smile was playing on Kyo's lips now, and he glanced up at his companion coyly. “Are you inviting me to spend the evening with you?”

Iori shrugged carelessly. “Do as you like. It's not like your decision will affect my plans.”

But he waited anyway, and Kyo fell into step beside him. Perhaps this wouldn't be his first Valentine's Day alone, after all.
