They enjoyed a wonderful evening with their family: laughing and celebrating. Both of them were giddy with happiness and they didn't care who saw. Once everybody left and the kids were upstairs asleep along with Meryl's dad, she went in search of her husband. She smiled when she saw him wiping the kitchen counter. "None of that husband, come with me."
"What?" Don laughed as she led him out the backdoor. "Where are we going? What about your dad? The kids?"
Meryl stopped as she turned around and slowly kissed his lips. "Tonight is about us."
Don didn't say anymore as he followed her to their small guesthouse on their property and smiled when they walked in as he saw candles, wine, and food. "What is this?"
"I promised you alone time, and we have it." Meryl smiled.
Don laughed as he remembered their earlier conversation. "Oh, we never talked to the kids about how they're treating you. I'm not okay with-"
"Baby, this is our wedding night. No talk about the kids. My dad. Your parents. Nothing but us." She smiled as she went and turned on the CD she prepared. "Now, dance with me?
Don beamed as he took her in his arms and held her as close as possible, as he savored every minute like he had promised. "Kenny Rogers?" He teased.
"Listen to the words." She laughed as she shook her head and claimed his lips in hers.
I can't remember when you weren't there
When I didn't care for anyone but you
I swear we've been through everything there is
Can't imagine anything we've missed
Can't imagine anything the two of us can't do
Through the years, you've never let me down
You turned my life around, the sweetest days I've found
I've found with you ... Through the years
I've never been afraid, I've loved the life we've made
And I'm so glad I've stayed, right here with you
Through the years
I can't remember what I used to do
Who I trusted, who I listened to before
I swear you taught me everything I know
Can't imagine needing someone so
But through the years it seems to me
I need you more and more
Through the years, through all the good and bad
I knew how much we had, I've always been so glad
To be with you ... Through the years
It's better every day, you've kissed my tears away
As long as it's okay, I'll stay with you
Through the years
Through the years, when everything went wrong
Together we were strong, I know that I belong
Right here with you ... Through the years
I never had a doubt, we'd always work things out
I've learned what love's about, by loving you
Through the years
Through the years, you've never let me down
You've turned my life around, the sweetest days I've found
I've found with you ... Through the years
It's better every day, you've kissed my tears away
As long as it's okay, I'll stay with you
Through the years!
When the music ended, Meryl looked up at Don. "You are the only one I want to share this life with. You are the only one I have ever wanted to grow old with. I know I have said this many times, but it bares repeating, many men asked me to marry them..."
"Is this supposed to make me feel good?" Don teased.
Meryl playfully smacked her husband. "But you are the only one I have ever wanted to marry. You are the only one I have wanted by my side through the years. When you were hit, when we found out why, my breath left me, it did for several days. We’re getting our breaths back and there is no one else in this world I would rather breathe with than you; you are my breath, you are my heart, you are my life.”
"I've been trying not to think about it, but all day long I've been thinking about your shooting-how we almost lost you. When you were shot, I saw our life together flash before my eyes, and it has been an amazing and beautiful life, however it's not over. There is so much more to come. We have years and years ahead of us, and dare I say the best is yet to come."

Meryl promised Don a night of being alone. She took his hand and led him into the master bedroom of the small guesthouse. Meryl quickly changed into a green teddy and was lighting candles when Don came back in after locking the doors and bringing in the wine. He knew they wouldn't stay there all night, but he didn't want any interruptions. Don came up behind her and began to nuzzle her hair and sighed. "You are so breathtakingly beautiful."
"That feels so good." Meryl moaned as his fingers massaged her neck. She felt all the worry of the past weeks evaporate.
Don kissed the back of her head. "Moaning so soon?"
"If you like that, just wait until things heat up." She smirked even though he couldn't see.
Don smiled as his lips trailed along her cheekbones and slipped from her shoulders to disappear inside her teddy, and covered her breasts. "Feel good?" His lips pressed into the hollow behind her ear and he felt her nipples harden under his touch.
"God, I crave your touch." She moaned. They had been so careful lately when making love because of his injuries, and she forgot how much she missed this slow and agonizing foreplay.
Don whispered into her ear. "I want to love every inch of you tonight...that okay with you?"
"More than okay-it's what I need." She moaned as she ran her tongue over her lips.
"Me too, baby." Don whispered as he turned her around and helped her out of her teddy, completely naked. Don lifted one breast in his hand, bent to take the nipple between his lips at the same time his other hand stroked between her legs, his fingers delving into her slick warmth.
Meryl pulled his sweater and t-shirt over his head. She needed to feel the warmth of his skin, the roughness of his body hair. "Don..."
When it was no longer enough, when he needed more, he laid her back on the bed. He knelt on the floor before her; his index finger trailing up and down the wet pink satiny flesh, feeling her thighs quiver with each gentle pass. Unable to shake his thirst for her any longer, he parted her sensitive flesh and bent his head giving her a gentle tender kiss that caused her to arch in an agony of need. With lips and tongue and teeth, he drove her closer and closer to the edge of ecstasy until she was thrashing on the bed grasping at the sheets and moaning his name while her hips rose to his mouth. Only for him to stop.
Meryl whimpered in agony. "God Don, don't stop."
Don rubbed his cheek between her thighs and rested his chin on her pubic bone just below her scar that was proof she carried his babies, and then looked up at her with a smile. She was on her elbows looking down at him. Her eyes were ablaze with passion, her face flushed, and she ran her fingers through his hair.
"Please...baby." Meryl begged.
Don stood and slid his pants and boxers down to release his rock hard erection. It bobbed before him, and Meryl was aching badly. "Ready?"
"God, yes." She moaned, not sure how much longer she could hold out.
Don didn't make her wait that much longer. He moved between her thighs, and stretched her arms over her head. His eyes caught hers. He knew this woman as intimately as a man could know a woman. He knew the taste of her whole body. He knew the sounds she made when her pleasure was great, knew what she was like in passionate abandon and in the throes of climax. He knew what it was like to watch her pleasure him with her mouth, to swallow his essence and to watch himself enter her body. She was his wife, his life. So many couples who had been together as long as they had been grew tired or bored with one another, but not them, never. Don's desire for Meryl was as strong as it was on their first wedding night. Making love to her was always a thrill, always new, always exciting. He then slid within her, one long thrust.
Meryl arched and pulled him down to her then loving the feel of his weight upon her and of the hair on his body. Her hips rose to meet his thrusts, wanting and needing him as deep as she could take him. Her fingers moved from his hips where she had been stroking him to run over his buttocks feeling the muscles clenching with every thrust within her. Her fingers dug into the firm flesh pulling him within her harder, faster, deeper until they both spun out of control, over the edges of ecstasy and into breath stealing orgasms.
Laying heavily on top of her, still within her body, the sweat of his chest dampening hers, his breath still ragged and catching at the same time when the quiver of an aftershock caused her inner muscles to contract around him. Don thought briefly about all her good looking co-stars and the times he had gotten jealous over the years. He did not have to be jealous of them. He knew he was the only one who was able to turn her into a quivering mass of begging need, into a passionate tigress meeting him touch for touch, stroke for stroke.
"A penny for your thoughts, babe." Meryl tenderly teased the sweat-dampened hair at the nape of his neck causing him to shiver.
He withdrew from her and took her into his arms. "Just thinking about how lucky I am to have you."
"It goes both ways." She whispered as she leaned up and kissed him. "Thank you for my gorgeous new band. I can't believe you did that."
Don smiled as his fingers ran over her skin. "Just a sign of my never ending love for you. I know you, you can continue to wear your old band too."
"Thank you." She laughed. "I guess we should get back to the house and put out the presents."
Don held onto her more tightly. "No, let's stay here for a little bit. I want to savor this moment. I want to savor you."
"I love you." Meryl whispered with another kiss to his lips.
Don moaned as the kiss deepened. "I love you, forever."
