hmm...does it make it worse that Brittney announced the divorce to Kevin via a text message on his cell phone?
I don't think hollywood is to blame for hte increased rate. hollywood only makes up a small proportion of the population, and despite the frequency of divorce, i don't think that group can outweigh the other 300 million people in our country. i think, rather, that hollywood is just the exaggeration of has already gone on in our society, and then further exacerbates the problem by then making it look like it's ok to those who are young and impressionable.
My question to you now is....
Why should the federal government care about sanctity of marriage? Do you really think congress should pass a law about when it is acceptable to divorce someone, or to make sure two people really do love each other and are compatible before they get married? Should it matter to uncle sam if you were in idiot when you got married in the first place? if you get divorced, then you can't bum off of someone's health insurance or get their inheritance automatically, and so from the U.S. government's propspective, i don't see why they care. no where in the constitution does it say congress must be the "moral police" of its citizens. congress's only job is to make rules about things that people can't take care of individually (i.e. a military, taxes for programs, pollution laws so we don't give the entire population cancer, etc.) and make sure that people aren't out murdering each other or causing other harm/disorder to society.
I absolutely do not think that the government should regulate marriage at all. Which is why I made the point that it is ridiculous to ban gay marriage quoting the "sanctity of marriage" when it already is basically non existent when you consider the nation's divorce rate. And I don't truly believe hollywood is responsible for the average being so high, but I do think that the average hollywood personality does get divorced many more times than your average citizen. I was just saying that if the government does demand to stick it's nose into marriage, its approach is retarded.
Personally I think marriage is between two people, God, and the church. I'd like to see the churches make it a rule that you can't get married if you've gotten divorced under lame pretenses.
