I want to crawl up and cry a little bit, but my urge to share tonight's events are keeping me going.
I'm not sure how many people lost power from the storm today, but I know Wickford was out for a good 3 hours, at least. Work was absolutely RIDICULOUS. Words can't even begin to describe tonight's experience. It was...bad. It's something I'd like to forget, but I know I won't.
Obviously a huge storm came through. The sky was black, and the lightning was intense. At the time I was enjoying the storm, but I didn't realize how much trouble it would make. The power went out...only for a second, until the generator kicked on. Alright, there was enough power to keep the register up. And then the regular lights came on about 10 minutes later. We thought we were alright...almost everything was back up and running, but a few of the cases were out. Apparently only a few 'legs' of power were out, but they would be back on by 930, so we covered the cases that were off with plastic to keep the cold air in.
Things were going mostly alright, Deb was having a bit of a meltdown because Bozzuto's was supposed to make a delivery, but all the lights in the back were out except for the break room and one random light in the ceiling, but she figured that between between her, Michele, and whatever natural light was left that they would be alright.
Fast forward to 810, when the lights started flickering. Apparently we were on the generator still, and didn't know it, and whatever power was left was about to run out. The registers went down in the middle of transactions. It was bad...we started running to tell customers to bring their stuff up to the registers, but it was too late for most of them...by the time they got up to check out the generator had failed to the point where the computers shut down.
We had to put away a few carriages worth of groceries, which kind of sucked. I guess John Eddy came in at some point, and he told us to put all the red meat into carriages and put them into the cooler. We started doing that, first it was only me and Nathaniel, but then almost everyone else came to help. We put them in the meat freezer, which was crammed full of cases of meat, so we had to move stuff all around to get all the carriages to fit...there were at least 6. The floors were so slippery from all the condensation from things warming up...gross.
There were probably 4 of us in the cooler, and we get out to get more stuff, and we look down the hall and were like 'uh, what happened to the light in the meat room?' ALL of the power had gone out. NO lights were left. It was COMPLETELY dark in store (not to mention really creepy...). We went back up to CS...hung out up there for a while. Then they told us to take care of the rest of the meat...and we had missed some stuff in the coffin case. It was hard to do in the dark, John was standing there holding a flashlight. Thank god the dairy cooler was almost empty, because there was no room left in the meat room.
We had no idea when the power was going to come back again, so we had to start putting plastic/paper all over the rest of the cases. SUCH a bitch to do in the pitch black. We got almost all the way down the far side of produce, and the lights came back on. Figures. I will NEVER forget this night. I'd like to...but there's no way.
Gotta love the DMP.
