upon reading blue like jazz

...I found this poem that I didn't understand when I first met it.
upon our second encounter I it came to life giving it this necessary personification.
I thik this is just a piece of it though. I will search for the rest or atleast a title. All I know
is that it is written by C. S. Lewis. It's so deeply personal:

All this is flashy rhetoric about loving you
I have never had a selfless thought since I was born
I am a mercenary and self-seeking through and through
I want God, you, all friends, merely to serve my turn

Peace, reassurance, pleasure, are the goals I seek
I cannot crawl one inch outside my proper skin
I talk of love- a scholar's parrot may talk Greek-
But, self-imprisoned, always end where I begin.

this, I feel, is where I am as a Christian so much more often than living
out one of the greatest teachings of all.
" It is better to give than receive"
to be free of selfish desire, this is something I want deeply
