If only they really did "just work"

I love my iPhone. I HATE iPhone updates. This is the second time one has managed to brick my phone and forced me to spend half a day fixing it. This particular update decided to bugger off half way through, thoroughly hosing my phone. It also decided to uninstall Apple's USB Mobile Device drivers from my PC while it was at it so it wouldn't even *recognize* my phone to restore it after the update catastrophe. For whatever reason, pointing the "install new hardware" wizard or the Device Manager "install driver" wizards to the proper location on my hard drive just didn't work (and believe me, I tried: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers can bite me). Doing a repair install of iTunes didn't work either, possibly because it doesn't touch that folder in the process. I ended up having to uninstall all things Apple - iTunes, Quicktime, Mobile Device Support, Apple Update Manager - rebooting, and reinstalling iTunes 8.2.1 from scratch to fix the driver issue. Only THEN could I begin the long slog of restoring my phone to factory default and recovering from backup. GRARRRR. ME SMASH PUNY APPLE.
