Dentistry, and the Future

As if having my Profs nag at me isn't enough, I get to hear it from my dental hygenist.

"So what year did you just finish in school?"

"Junior."

"Wow, so what are you planning to do after? Get your masters degree right?"

(Pause) "Well I don't really know right now. Probably not right away."

"But you wanted to be in education right?"

"Well no- there was this long and complicated thing that kept me from being an education major, so now I'm just a history major with a minor in professional writing."

"Well what are you thinking? There must be something you want to do."

(never before have I longed to have dentistry tools in my mouth. At this point I would have preferred getting my teeth drilled)

I muttered some sort of lame excuse and got on with the teeth drilling. She then asked me about my sisters careers and I couldn't help but feel silly in contrast. I mean, I'm working at Sears over the summer. I don't even have a good internship like most of my friends, I'm not applying to grad school and I quail at the thought of what I'll be doing next year at this time. Most of my new ideas require a major in english, which I should have done in the first place.

I don't want to get my masters yet. Mainly because I went into college with a plan and I'm coming out more confused than ever. When I go to graduate school, I want to be SURE. (yea, like that will ever happen.) Sometimes I feel like I switched my college and high school experiences around.. and that I was more responsible and serious in highschool than I am now. Oh well. I need to come up with a good answer for when people ask me the "what's next?" question. Any ideas?
