This is not directed at those in circumstances out of their control where they are trying to make the best of things. This is for all of us who want to do the best for our piggies, why we are all here, and are in a position to do so ( Read more... )

D: That's all so sad. My boys are mad at me for not taking them outside when I clean their cages, but it's been 100 for weeks now, and I'm afraid to let them out for even five minutes. Irving misses eating grass, and I let Henry try some last week, and he loves it. I'd be terrified to keep mine outside.

Also, when I was a little kid, my day care had guinea pigs, and my family was often asked to take them home for the weekend because we took really good care of them. The girl was always getting pregnant, and one time she was in a lot of distress while she was at our house. My mom called every vet in the city, and no one would see guinea pigs. Luckily, Sparkle made it, but her babies did not. They have a special place in a shoebox in my back yard, though. And luckily they took Fred, the boy, away from Sparkle so she wouldn't have babies anymore.

So sad. :\

When it's too hot or too wet (the most likely extreme, here), I cut grass and bring it in for the boys. I just use kitchen sheers, and cut whatever grass I can. They think it's the most wonderful thing every—all the munchy goodness without the climate changes and scary sounds of being outside.

Haha, I'm still kinda weary. They're doing major construction on our street, and I'm afraid the grass has bad stuff on it. The dust they've kicked up is literally EVERYWHERE.

You could try your hand at growing some wheatgrass (which is catgrass they sell at Petsmart). Pigs LOVE it. Alternately, if you're lazy (like me... *cough* most Harris Teeters sell it already cut in the organic section for like $2.50. ;)

I've considered doing that! I want to attempt to put some plants in my room as it is... the venus flytraps did not bode too well (I put an actual wounded fly in one of them, and the fucker didn't know to eat it!)... as soon as I replanted them into a bigger pot, they died from lack of humidity. -_-

Or, if you're like me and live within easy driving distance of an agricultural area, you can always trim some young grass hay at the side of a field. I do that every now and then, and my pigs love it!

Hey, if it makes you feel better, I've never kept a venus flytrap alive either. :)

Wheatgrass is pretty easy to grow, though. Usually by the time it germinates and uses up all the energy in the seed itself, it's long enough for piggies to chow down on!

Poor baby pigs :/ I hate it when it rains here at night because I always think of how many piggies are out there in hutches. All I can do is give my girlies extra cuddles.

We don't have good grass where I am sadly (shared building) but I do get them readigrass which is dried grass, they love it, heh. Can't wait until I move somewhere I can get my own supply of fresh grass for them :D

Honestly, when I first read that, I thought you said "because I think of how many piggies are out there in the ground" and I was thinking WAT

I have a pet cemetery in my front yard, behind a big bush. We seriously have about 20-30 animals in there that died over the 10 year period I had a lot of pets (died of natural causes, mind you). I shudder to think of using it again. :\

We had thunderstorms here daily for about two weeks in a row, my girls were FURIOUS with me. In an effort to keep the peace I cut grass for them and gave it to them with their salads.

It is 100 degrees out, and then today it rained and was a little cooler, but the ground was very wet. My boys are not going outside. Plus the grass is so long right now I keep freaking out that I'd accidentally put them on an ant pile. @____@
