SOA FEST 2005!
Well the School of the Americas protest this year is from November the 18th-20th. The School of the Americas (no called the north american institute for defense or some similar bullshit) is the United States run program to train "counter insurgency" and "para-military" groups which serve our interests in the third world. It was especially active during the cold war, training the nicaraguen contra's among other infamous terrorists. It is often called the worlds largest terrorist training camp and lives up to its reputation. It is notorious for teaching torture methods, hideous methods for extracting information such as the electric shocks made famous in the movie Romero and other things most Americans strongly disapprove of. It has earned us a rotten reputation in Latin America and did not help our rep in eastern europe and central asia (think afganistan, you gotta fight those commies). I feel pretty strongly that it is an institution thats time has come. The protest is huge and a great opportunity to meet people interested and active in social justice issues and be a part of the movement for social justice in the United States. I'd like us to do a trip there in Novemeber, I think it is in Georgia. Leave me a comment if you are interested.
