Whilst looking at facebook statuses I saw one that recalled a familiar moment in my life:
"RIP Democracy July 4, 1776...November 4, 2008"
My exact feelings on the Bush's reelection, with that last date changed a little. At the time I was wisely scolded for my negativity by Ros but didn't give it much thought. I was so offended that my thoughts and feelings could be violated in such a way. Granted, nobody really likes Bush anymore and you can't claim that he did much for the country, but I'm going to have to say he didn't flush it down the toilet. We can claim that safely, right? America isn't on the verge of collapse after eight years?
I think now more than ever Obama's message of change and hope is so important. There is so much negative and cynical energy out there and must be turned around. It's time to unite as a nation. So what if Obama wasn't your favorite candidate or John McCain would have been perfect without Palin as his running mate or you think that America will now turn to socialism (still makes no sense)? There is change in the air. America is clinging onto hope because politics, something that I have failed to see happen in my lifetime. For the first time in the history of the country, we have a black President. We have a black President and sixty years ago they weren't allowed to vote. Let's chew on that. Not our differences.
The country needs to learn how to love and embrace and forgive and heal. We don't all have to be the same party to do so or the same race or religion. We need to remember how to love and work together. To forget hate so people aren't denied the basic human rights of marriage. So that people can't claim America has failed and might collapse in the four years Barack Obama is President.
I was wrong to claim in a moment of pettiness that democracy was dead. It's still clinging to life, but only we can make it thrive.
That's my liberal belief, and I'm stickin' to it! Feeling the love for President elect Barack Obama and gays right now. Hoping everyone else feels it too.
