Edmonton is full of stabaholics

Edmonton just had its seventh murder of the year today. It had it's fifth one on Wednesday.

It just so happened that number five was in the apartment building I live in, and very close to my apartment. I won't say where for obvious reasons. But close enough.

There is nothing like waking up to news cameras at your entrance, just to find out that one of your neighbours was murdered and dismembered as discovered by the blood dripping in the unit below them.

So this brings my close encounters with extreme violence in Edmonton up to number 6.

  • Walking down 103a Ave this past summer: About 7 police officers run by me toward a liquor store on the corner, where there was some sort of fight or stabbing or something. The actual violence was about a half a block away, so I couldn't really tell what was going on, but it was something violent. It was just like being on an episode of COPS

  • Walking down 103a Ave another time this past summer: Four police cars, one after the other go screaming by me and squeal their tires around the corn of the intersection that I was just approaching. When I got to the intersection, police cars had an SUV completely surrounded, and had their guns out screaming. The people got out of the vehicle with hands up, and the police cuffed 4 people. One of them was fighting. It was just like being on an episode of COPS.

  • Driving by 101a Ave this fall on the way to work: Forensic units have an area around a building taped off, as a body is hanging out of the second floor window It was just like being on and episode of COPS

  • This fall at the entrance to my building: I was about to go into the entrance of my building, and then I noticed a couple of police officers snooping near the bushes on one of the ground level apartments, about 15 feet away from me. I didn't think too much of it. I just assumed that maybe someone had reported a bum sleeping in the bushes or something, since I've seen them in there a few times before. Then, all of a sudden, I heard the police screaming at someone and with their guns drawn, the person dropped to the ground. A number of police busted in the door and went in. I don't know what happened after that, other than noticing the placement of "Executing Warrant" (or something like that) signs on the patio when I left later on. It was just like an episode of COPS

  • And last but not least, is the murder and dismemberment close enough to me that I think that I heard it. My roommate and I heard screams at around the same time that the murder supposedly happened, but we brushed it off as another night of random screaming in by the partiers that live close by to us, and figured it was probably them. Not quite like an episode of COPS. Maybe 48 Hours.

I think I have witnessed more shit in the 8 months since I've been here, than I have in my entire life.

Have you figured out yet that I don't live in the nicest part of town? Believe it or not, the building I live in is in OK shape, and has amongst the most expensive rent in all of Edmonton (although it shouldn't, because it is not that nice). But it's filled full of riff raff. I guess that's what happens when you live in a city where everybody has money.

I've moving when my lease expires in a month. This is getting a little too close to home.
