This summer a Petland was opened across the parking lot from my work.  I was excited as the PetCo across the street had shut down.  Then I went in and saw that they were Selling puppies.  I really wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt eventhough it irked me that they didn't support local rescue groups.  I didn't spend any money in there and ( Read more... )

I wasn't happy that Petco shut down. I was sad actually. I mostly shop at Pet Supplies Plus for their prices, but it was nice to have Petco right there for when I didn't want to drive out of my way for Pet Supplies Plus. I was happy that another pet store was opening up in place of PetCo's closing so maybe I could still do that. That's what I meant.

No, they are not buying from reputable breeders, that's the point. They are telling their customers that the puppies are from good breeders and have papers. It's entirely possible that the retail staff does truely believe this because its what they are told. But the HSUS has documentation that some of their puppies are in fact coming from a few puppy mills in the North East. Granted, they aren't the horrible conditions that we've seen in puppy mill busts in East Texas, but the biggest one has had inspections and negative write ups by the USDA. But for some reason the USDA doesn't shut them down. I still don't get that. And the puppies probably do have papers, but Puppy Mills have a long history of registration fraud with the AKC and other registries. But since these are "pet" puppies and not "show" puppies, the fraud is rarely caught and dealt with.

I don't think it is wrong to buy puppies. I do wish everyone would get a shelter dog, but ya know, it's not for everyone, but people should know where the dogs are coming from so they can make an informed decision. Petland is lying about where their animals come from. Reputable breeders do NOT hand their puppies over for retail sale. Not even the ones that aren't show quality or even meant to be bred for show. Even the majority of backyard breeders don't do that.

And you know, if there were strict regulations which were Enforced on Puppy breeding facilities, to ensure safety and full disclosure, then there wouldn't be anything wrong with the facilities. It would still be unfortunate because it would take away from shelter animals and it would continue to perpetuate the animal population, but there wouldn't be anything Wrong with it at all.
