mal...

a lot of the girls that sing these songs don't seem to know what a bridge is or what it's supposed to do.

it's confusing me...

I don't really care for artists that don't recognize the need for song organization and thematic progression. If you've crafted a tune that can be repeated again and again for 3+ minutes, you've hit solid gold. But such an achievement is so rare. Often times, artists seem to repeat the same derivative musical phrase over and over again, as if they're trying to show of their handiwork. Even if it is almost impossible to consistently create melodies of pure genius, mediocre phrases strung together in a clever way often make for a fantastic song. If you're going to repeat an idea, there better be a damn good reason for it.

It just seems like a lot of indie rock fails to understand the purpose of composition and musical movement. Yes, many of the noises they make are fresh, interesting, and certainly original, but without any movement, no amount of well written, heart felt lyrics can save a song if it is melodically redundant.

I also disagree with how some producers are mixing a lot of songs these days. But hey, they have oodles and oodles of more experience than I do. Still, I think indie rockers sometimes consider different to be somehow better. A muffy sound never sounds good when used too extensively. I sincerely believe that the best mixers out there cost the most money and that it shows in the product. To be frank, some voices work incredibly well as another instrument among the instruments (see: Billy Corgan) and some do not (personally, I think Conor Oberst falls in this category. To be fair though, I still haven't listened to his latest, which I hear is much better). Some peoples should just fuckin sing. Perhaps some of these indie bands are deliberately going for a shitty sound under a progressive front. It really matters little. Last summer, while I was stuck with the radio while driving around Boise, the hideous song "girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne came on the air and, after retching a little, I listened closely and was flabbergasted at the quality of sound her mixers produced. Sure, she's a really shitty musician, but the people who work for her are not. There's a good reason why that song is played in clubs and featured in films, tv, and commercials. Pop music has some of the most musically talented people backing it, even if what they're backing is often nothing to write home about.

Anywho, that's my early morning rant. I did not sleep this night.
