The highest mountain is Picacho del Diablo, or Devil's Peak. It is part of the Sierra San Pedro Martir and from October to May is often snow-capped. It can be seen from mainland Mexico 140 miles away, and from far out in the Pacific Ocean in the west. From the shores of the bay, the costal plain slopes gently upward to the foot-hills of the Sierra San Pedro Martir, with Baja's highest peak, the 10,126 foot Picacho del Diablo, rising majestically into the bright blue sky. Climbers start their ascent of Picacho del Diablo from Canon El Diablo, 20 miles south. It is a difficult climb, and should not be attempted except by experienced climbers, preferably with a local guide who knows the area. This is a desolate, primitive area and it is NOT for the uninitiated. The southern end of these mountains is still largely a virgin wilderness, almost untouched by the hands of men since the days of the early Spanish Explorers. There are a few rough trails across these mountains, but they should be used only by experienced mountain climbers.
