Weather Or Not

Sep 27, 2007 07:11

The sunny days we've been enjoying this past week have given way to clouds and rain, but it's of the gentle, cleansing, soothing variety, that is easily as welcome as the energizing sunfilled days just past. Sometimes the weather seems to be so in synch with one's current emotions, or spirit's needs. Have you ever noticed that in your lives?

Being a more nature centered as opposed to a techi person, I am very sensitive to environmental, and weather fluctuations. The mood changes that weather effects, have always been interesting to me. Sometimes, a rainy day is just what's needed to enhance the needs for a day of quiet introspection, or just allowing your day to be one of suspended activity and restfullness. Other times, the energizing effects of a sunny day, spur me on to accomplish a lot.

Having lived in climates as diverse as Buffalo, N.Y., Maine, Florida, and Texas, really brought all this home to me. Long, grey dreary winters produce negative changes in me, as I am troubled by SADD, (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Growing up on L.I., N.Y. was dismal for me in the winter. The Autumn and early winter months in Northeastern Texas were beautiful and invigorating in their clear, bright beauty, with a drizzly, sleety, dreary couple of months beafore giving way to the glorious Spring, and the unforgettable Texas wildflowers.

Buffalo, and Maine were somewhat similar: dramatic snowfalls, with lots of accumualtion, and long winters, Florida, a weather non-event.

What I have found, is that I enjoy the beauty and drama of weather, in all it's unpredictable glory, and faces, and don't like living in places where there is no "weather". Precipitation in its various forms, drizzle, fog, gentle, teeming, and intermittent rains, snowfalls, and the varieties of sunny days, all add a certain texture to our days, and a backdrop to the dramas of our lives. Indeed, weather produces dramas of its own. Tornados, Hurricanes, flooding, drought, thunderstorms, blizzards, are events which paint the canvas of our rich and varied experiences. Adjusting and adapting to what severe weather events present us with, whether digging out from the "snowstorm of the century", or rebuilding after the disaster of a flood or a tornado, presents us with challenges and creates opportunities for building community amongst the victims and surivors, the disaster workers, the community at large, and the greater world. We relish the gentle cooling rains of summer, and celebrate the rainfall for our crops and gardens. And the natural gifts that weather produces, like rainbows, and cooling, gentle breezes, are all a part of the natural tapestry of our lives.

As for me, I think that today, instead of behaving like a salmon swimming upstream to spawn, struggling to surmount my "to do" list, I shall let the weather be my guide, and call the shots. Today, I will be gentle with myself, and allow myself to be restful.

I hope you all have the very finest of days, be it rain, or shine. Peace.
