Ay caramba! It's that time of year again! Sound the alarm! Put up the decorations! Rearrange the furniture! Clean the carpets! Run around and panic!
For yet another year, I'm hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner at my place on Thanksgiving Day. Here are the specifics:
What: Thanksgiving dinner with party games and socializing before and after. I'll provide the turkey, gravy, stuffing, water, milk, and sugar-free flavored water. Other folks provide everything else. (Please see list below and reply with that you'll be bringing so I can keep track.)
When: Thursday 11/22/2012. Arrive anytime after 1pm. Dinner should be ready around 6pm (ish).
Where: My apartment. LJ-PM, email, call, or TXT me if you need my address in Carrollton.
Why: In 2001 I discovered how hard it was to get the Friday after Thanksgiving off work. That year I made a whirl-wind trip home (9hr drive there, 2hrs for dinner and family, then 9hr drive back). I just wasn't up to that in 2002. But I didn't want to spend thanksgiving alone. And neither did some of my friends. So I decided to have thanksgiving /w my friends locally instead (and make a more sensible trip home to family the weekend after). Folks seem to like it, 'cause they keep coming back. :-)
Who: Everyone who can see this LJ post plus those I email (and their roommates/SOs and maybe a friend) are invited! However, I have a small apartment which simply can't fit everyone on the invite list (plus roommates, SOs, friends, etc). So, before RSVPing, please keep in mind that this event is intended for folks who don't have their own family (or substitute family) to spend the holiday with. If you've got your own and are able to get to them, please go spend some time with them and be grateful for them. (That's the point of the holiday, after all.) If you don't, you're welcome to spend time in the company of us vagabonds and share some food. :-) (To be clear, I'm not turning anyone away outright. I consider all of you my friends or I wouldn't invite you into my home. But my circle of friends has expanded greatly in the past few years. If the list of RSVPs get too big we'll have to get creative with seating/dining arrangements and/or split the group up.)
NOTE: PLEASE RSVP below so we can keep track of things. Just state that you plan to come, when you think you'll arrive, who you plan to bring with you, and what food (if any) you plan to bring with you to share. Also, please note whether you have a folding chair you can bring. (I've got a few, but we'll need more.) We'll have room in the fridges for cold things, and we'll do our best to keep warm things warm. My oven will be tied up for all but 30-45 mins before the meal with the turkey, but I have a couple of nearby neighbors who might let us use theirs in a pinch. :-)
What I need guests to bring:
-Mashed potatoes (We need basic ones, but some fancy ones are good too)
-Sweet potato or Yams in some form or fashion (halved, roasted, & served with butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon would be fab!)
-Sodas (A variety of diet and non-diet. Cans preferred, but 2-liters are fine. We have a separate mini-fridge for these.)
-Bread (fresh-baked loaves, dinner rolls, croissants /w cheese rolled in them, etc)
-Green vegetables of some kind, even cooked into something else
-A dessert or two.
I look forward to seeing and hanging out with everyone who comes! :-D
