Why must so-called "Slytherfen" make Slytherin into a woobie House?
Myself, I think it could be awesome in a nasty sense. Full of really nasty people, dangerous, Dark, intricate, and... you could write political thrillers based upon Slytherin House if you wanted to. But no, the so-called Slytherfen insist on making it a floofy place full of "elegant", snide rich brats. WHY?
Katherine Miller (a.k.a. Kendra Dumbledore before getting her name officially changed at the Ministry to something more Wizarding), practically an OC, is a good example of the kind of Slytherin I think people could write. She's unpleasant, bigoted, and arrogant. She's also highly intelligent, resourceful, cunning, and determined to see her family succeed (or at least stay safe). I like writing her, even though she has an enormous chip on her shoulder.
I also enjoy Slytherin!Ron, who's got a lot of bitterness over the way his family treated him when he was Sorted into Slytherin (except for Percy, who took him aside and told him quietly that Ron was a far, far braver man than he himself had been when it came time to be Sorted) and when it came out in his second year that he had some Parselmouth abilities, but is loyal to the death when it comes to Harry and Hermione, and will "use any means" to keep them safe (including manipulating his own Housemates). Does he have a horrid temper and major self-esteem issues? Yes. (If he didn't, I might as well change his name and call him an OC! :D;;) Is he someone you'd definitely want on your side in a fight? Hell yes.
This's a side of the good Slytherins that I don't think people write often - the kind who may not be pleasant people, but will defend their own no matter what. And it's a canon one - Snape and the Malfoys sell out the Dark Lord himself to keep their loved ones safe. And that's something... I can respect, even if it can cause some really twisted behavior. (Heck, in my fanon, the Sorting Hat attempted to suggest Hufflepuff to Katherine at first due to not wanting to throw a Muggleborn into the mix of Dark Purebloods, but then admitted that Helga would rise from the grave and ask the Hat what in the world it was thinking on the grounds of Katherine's honesty [or, rather, the lack thereof] alone. :P But it was her second-most-fitting House...) But, point being, why do people refuse to write bastard!Slytherins who are redeemed by their insane loyalty?
