A couple of weeks had passed. No sign of Brian. KJ tried to tell herself to move on, but there was something deep down inside that she just couldn't let go of. She didn't want to have to go back to hiding from everyone and thinking that nobody understood her.. because she knew Brian did. At least that's what she believed from him.
She tried to forget about everything that happened. Live life the way it was supposed to be lived alone. Whenever she hung out with some friends though, it felt like there was something missing because they all had boyfriends and girlfriends except for her...
KJ sighed as she walked home from school one gloomy day. After she closed the door behind her, the doorbell rang. She opened to door to see Brian standing there, looking at her a bit nervously. "Hey KJ.." he said as he shifted a bit in his position.
"Hi.." she replied quietly.
"Can we talk?" he asked, hoping to step inside. It was starting to rain.
She sighed and nodded, leaving the door open so he could enter. Brian walked in and followed KJ up to her bedroom. He looked at her when she sat down on the bed. "I was hoping things could go back the way they were.." he said reassuringly.
She looked up at him a bit questioningly. "You want things to go back to the point where you were also going out with other girls behind my back?" she asked a bit harshly.
"KJ..." he said, his voice a bit impatient. "Things have changed.. It feels weird not to have you around anymore.. and even now there seems to be a problem when we're talking."
"I keep a guard up for when people hurt me.." she muttered, not looking at him. He started to say something but she continued. "When I let my guard down around people I trust, they seem to have a tendancy to hurt me so now I plan to keep it up forever."
"So you don't want to get back together?"
"Brian!" she stated, glaring up at him. But her eyes seemed to show some fear. "You don't know what it's like to be hurt in a way that you feel like you're vulnerable all over again. Like you'll never find someone to take the place of the person who was last protecting you... who made you feel like you were never alone in the first place."
"You've never been alone--"
"I'm alone right now!" KJ stated, looking away from him. "I kept forgiving you all those other times because you were the only one who made me feel like I wasn't alone. But now I need to keep you away so you won't hurt me again.."
Brian sat down on the bed next to KJ, wrapping his arms around her. She didn't pull away. Her muscles were tensed, but she didn't pull away from his hug. "I'm sorry KJ..." he said quietly, feeling worried when he felt her head start to shake in disbelief. He rested his head against hers, rubbing her back lightly with his right hand. "Please... Please forgive me..."
