Bone Carving

A few months ago I took my first foray into bone carving, courtesy of one of my roommates.

I use a rotary tool, dremel, and an etching machine. We have several dozen bits that do almost everything I can think of on just about every material anyone could ever want to carve. We also use sand paper and calligraphy inks/nibs.

After a long hiatus due to heat and health issues (plus I got a much smaller, stylus style dremel tool), I decided to redo the first piece I started on. I used the rotary tool to rough out a tear-drop shape. I then used a pencil to sketch the image onto the bone. I used an etching bit to work the pattern into the bone. I then used the sanding bit, sand paper, and finally finishing grit to achieve a smooth and almost mirror finish. Lastly, I used Dragon's Blood ink (courtesy of Danouri) and clear fingernail polish to ink and finish it. I will be buffing it one final time tomorrow once everything has set and I will post pictures.

I also began work on my second piece: a triskelion that will be dyed black and given metallic/bronze outlines. I have several other pieces in the planning stages. Until I started working with bone, I didn't think I had any form of visual art talent in me whatsoever. I'm fairly impressed with myself thus far and I'm looking forward to where this will go!
