When Rose was summoned from the clinic to the Headmistress’ office, she was feeling pretty cocky about it. Even if she hadn’t really been supposed to visit Victor Dashkov, the fact that she was there had kept his plan to have his daughter Natalie turn Strigoi and free him from succeeding. Well, okay, the fact that Dimitri had been there, but he wouldn’t have gone unless she had. Probably.
So she headed to the meeting, still weak from blood loss and being thrown into a wall too many times and kinda stumbly but totally feeling good about this. The feeling lasted even as she pushed open the door to see Alberta and Dimitri there along with Kirova.
“Sit down, Miss Hathaway,” Kirova said, gesturing to a seat in front of the desk.
That wasn’t quite the welcome Rose had hoped for. She sat though, attempting to look demure. Not that it worked.
“I’m glad to see you’re up and about,” Kirova continued, looking almost concerned. “From the reports I’ve received, you did an admirable job handling the situations that have arisen over the past few days.” Rose sneaked a quick glance at Dimitri, trying to see his reaction to this. “Better than one would expect given your recent - absence from your classes.”
Now Rose smiled, sitting up to get ready to say ‘yes, of course she’d come back to St Vlad’s.’ She wasn’t even going to try to give it the typical Rose Hathaway snarky spin.
“So I find myself curious, Miss Hathaway. This school you went to over the summer seems to have effected quite a change. You still have a long way to go to catch up with the other novices, but extra work and training sessions will help with that,” the headmistress paused for a long moment, studying Rose. “I’ve decided to send you back to Fandom for the school year.”
“What?” Rose couldn’t help exploding. “You said I did well! I kept Lissa safe! I’ve been catching up! Even Dimi - Guardian Belikov thinks so!” She thought he did at least. “You’re kicking me out again?”
Kirova lifted a hand, and Rose tried to settle down, still seething. “I didn’t say anything about expelling you. We’ve agreed that you’ll stay a novice at St Vladimir’s and be eligible for your trials next year. You’ll attend Fandom High School for the upcoming year and continue your guardian training there.”
That - didn’t even make sense. Rose crossed her arms over her chest, her mouth opening to point out all the ways it didn’t.
“Guardian Belikov will be going with you to train you and make sure you stay on task.” Rose startled and looked over at Dimitri. He was being all formal guardian and impassive, and his face didn’t show any thoughts one way or another. “His reports,” Kirova continued, “will form the basis for your grades as a novice, and you’ll answer to him for anything related to your training.” She raised an eyebrow at Rose. “Is that clear?”
Rose opened her mouth and then shut it again. “Yeah,” she said finally. “I got it. You think I did good, and so you’re sending me away. Right. Makes perfect sense.”
Kirova sighed. “As always, Miss Hathaway, your attitude doesn’t help matters. You have two hours before a car will take you and Guardian Belikov to the airport if you’d like to say your goodbyes, you’re dismissed.
She threw another glance at Dimitri then at Alberta before she nodded and stood up. “Right. Thanks.” She’d said thank you. No one could ever say she wasn’t totally polite.
