It was supposed to get better. That's what they said, right? That grief got better with time? That eventually that jagged hole in the center of Rose's heart would stop hurting so much she couldn't breathe or that her ripped soul would get used to that missing piece and not feel the loss every moment. It hadn't yet. None of it. Janine had bullied her out of her initial daze, and Dimitri's last present of her stake had given her focus for a while, but over the past few days as she went through the motions of life at St Vlad's, watching it slowly, slowly getting back to something approaching normal, feeling Lissa's worry and unvoiced questions, Rose couldn't help starting to wonder about her decision to go after Dimitri.
She thrust that wondering back behind a wall in her mind. There were plenty of other people who could protect Lissa even if no one could do it as well as Rose. No one else could find Dimitri. No one else could set him free. It's what he'd want, and he'd have done the same thing for her if things had turned out differently. Rose shuddered at the thought of Dimitri being Strigoi, those dark eyes ringed in red, his gentleness turned into something vicious and terrible.
That was it then. No matter what, that had to be most important. The violence and killing that a Strigoi lived for couldn't be Dimitri's life. She owed it to him to set him free. After that, it didn't matter what happened.
Rose followed their bond to Lissa, finding her in her room, her golden hair lit by a lamp as she bent over a book. She was alone for once, and Rose couldn't help breathing a sigh of relief that Christian hadn't been with her. "Hey, Liss," she said quietly, soaking in the sight of her best friend.
