Rose scowled at the pile of clothes still on her bed. They were cute things - tops and skirts and tighter jeans that had been fun to wear around Fandom but didn't have a place back in Montana. Nearly everything she'd packed had been completely utilitarian. The stuff that she could wear for training for years in the cold or wet and not wear out

Kennedy stood in the doorway for a moment, surveying the proceedings with a certain amount of distaste. "Just so you know, I was trying to call people to get them to put off this whole making-people-leave thing? But I don't think it worked."

"Were you calling the right people?" Rose checked. "Because someone's got to be able to do it, right?"

"Either that or I'm losing my touch," Kennedy decided. "Let me just go on the record as saying this part blows."

"Heard and agreed with," she replied. "Whoever came up with the whole 'leaving' idea should be shot."

[brat_inslayage]

"Or something equally dire. But bright side?" Kennedy shoved her hands in her pockets and shrugged. "You've got some pretty awesome stuff to do. That is still a bright side, right?"

"Damn straight," Rose agreed. "I'm not arguing." Well, not much. "Pass my trials next week, get my promise mark, and with any luck, I'll get to protect Lissa forever. It'll be pretty awesome."

[brat_inslayage]

"Sounds like." Kennedy wasn't even trying not to sound envious. "Not that I don't know you'll kick some serious ass at the trials, but let me know how that goes, if you can."

"I am bringing my phone and my laptop," she said, pointing to the laptop bag. "They couldn't keep me from staying in touch if they tried." She frowned a little. "What about you and your ass-kicking? How's that going?"

"Would you do it anyway, even if they tried?" Kennedy had to ask, but she made a face at the question. "It's going? I mean. No shiny new abilities yet, but I'm still doing what I can."

"Yup," Rose said instantly, grinning a little at the question. "And don't you be doubting it. There's a lot you can do without superpowers. And if it doesn't work out, I bet Beka would love to be your partner in her world."

"I'd be disappointed if you didn't try," Kennedy told her. And she would have been a little disturbed if the answer had been no. Uh. Not that she thought it would have.

"And that's another offer I'm keeping on the table, yeah. You know how it is." She paused. "I know it's kind of a little pointless to ask you to be careful, but I sort of want to ask it anyway."

Rose would be disturbed if the answer had been no too. Because...dude, wtf.

"I will try really, really hard not to get killed," Rose offered. "If you promise to do the same?"

Yeah, hell didn't need to freeze over that way again.

Kennedy held her hand up. "Promise. I like that version better."

"Yeah, me too. Neither of us are really...made to be careful," she laughed. "It'd be a little depressing."

[brat_inslayage]

"And boring," Kennedy added, rolling her eyes in amusement.

A moment of silence, trying not to think about how she only had a year to go, then: "You know, I'm gonna miss you."

"And dying of boredom would be totally embarrassing," Rose agreed.

She glanced down, "I'm gonna miss you too. It pretty cool we got this long to hang out though."
