Rose shifted from foot to foot as she stood in the lounge. She was at the back, watching the door while Eddie Castile who was assigned to Lissa for his field experience had the window side of the room. Lissa and Christian were watching a movie, and for once today they weren't discussing the bomb Rose had dropped on them earlier.
After breakfast, Lissa and Christian had headed to the library to do some studying - Lissa was never not going to be a huge geek - on their Saturday morning. Rose waited until the studying was mostly done and the guardians had wandered through checking if the novices were doing their job before telling them - and Adrian who had come in at some point - the news. Victor Dashkov was going to trial in a few weeks and they weren't allowed to go testify.
Their collective reaction was right about the same as Rose's had been: shock, frustration, anger that they wouldn't be able to testify as the people who'd been hurt by Victor and ensure he would be locked up for good. Lissa's reaction especially shook Rose, not the least because she could feel exactly how terrified and helpless and confused Lissa was over the whole thing. Rose hoped desperately that Lissa would calm down; she couldn't let Lissa delve into those dark feelings again and then leave St Vlad's to make her deal with them alone. But as Lissa finally grew calmer, Rose found herself growing more and more angry.
There was only so long they could discuss the situation and the few possibilities open to them before Yuri came into the library, taking notes on the novices present. At Eddie's hiss of warning, Rose shot back to her feet before he saw her socialising with the Moroi instead of standing properly on guard. She stayed standing after Yuri glanced their way and then left, worried about yet another black mark on her record. She was angry still too and listening to Lissa and Christian rage over Victor's trial didn't help at all. She wanted to join in, make her arguments, yell at the stupidity, but her duty as a guardian was to protect the Moroi, not follow her own wishes. They came first. As always.
Rose yanked her thoughts back into the present as she realised the movie was over, and Lissa and Adrian who'd shown up randomly again like a cat that couldn't stay away were animatedly discussing spirit and healing. The warm glow of Lissa's magic washed over Rose as she reached out to heal the scratch Eddie had received in a training exercise earlier. Her use of magic - as always - worried Rose, but for once she was more focused on that attack. Eddie had performed brilliantly, taking Stan down without faltering, but afterwards Stan had accused her of glory-seeking, trying to get in on the fight instead of protecting the Moroi behind her. It was unfair and stupid and Rose clenched her fists again just thinking of it. Stan couldn't judge her motivations, but he was anyway, and she couldn't do anything but take it.
She shook her head, frustrated that she was doing so badly on what was supposed to be a chance for her to prove herself to the other instructors. Glancing up again, she saw Christian standing, and Rose moved to his side. He rolled his eyes at Adrian and Lissa's involvement in their magic and made his excuses to go to the feeders. Rose followed dutifully. It didn't matter if she'd prefer to stay, and she needed to keep remembering that.
