A message in red pen is quick to appear, in handwriting that's neat but not as dry as one with a passing acquaintance with the writer might expect.

"We suspect everyone has been as unhappy as we to be sent out distressingly unequipped into mortal peril, mystery, and/or strange nonsense. As you know, we have been endeavoring to correct the ( Read more... )

Loran couldn't deny that the advice was sound. He really knew so little about this place, and his decision to stay was rather impulsive. Though he knew exactly why he did what he did, mortal peril be damned. The last two years of his life had granted him innumerable opportunities to impact the lives of many people for the better. The warmth and contentment he felt inside when he saw a smiling face, heard sincere thanks, or simply knew that things had been changed even a little bit for the better... well, that was worth the mortal peril he had faced until now. It would likely be the same on this strange journey.

"I'm glad you're looking out for your fellow crewmates, sir, but I don't think I'll be able to fully take your advice. If my presence here can truly help others, then I want to do that, to the extent of my abilities. ...Don't worry, though! I'm not the reckless sort..." He waved his hands as if trying to hammer in the point, turning his attention to the scanner device.

"If you'd like, I could share with you and the others what I know about my home. For what it's worth, though, this is all very helpful! I've worked with a fair bit of interesting technology in my life..." A little bit of an understatement, but it worked. "...So I think I'll be able to use this device to its full capabilities." The determined tone in his voice echoed his earlier declaration.

"Well, any technical expertise is more than welcome," he says. Turning back to the device, he points out features with the tip of a finger. "User interface is non-graphical, as streamlined as we could manage. Tests are organized into families, buttons are simple toggles and selection. Select a family of tests for a full battery; the scanner will self-calibrate, run any that're relevant. Or delve into a family and select a specific inquiry you'd like to run." Holding it where Loran can see it, he toggles through to 'Chemical,' selects 'Elemental,' and points it at the sleeve of his own suit coat. A press of a button yields instant results.
